Marla Berrett Fuerer was born on March 22, 1951 to LaMar Cecil Berrett and Darlene Hamilton Berrett in Murray, Utah. She passed away the evening of December 4, 2017 at home, surrounded in a long awaited reunion with her 4 children and her eternal companion. The oldest of nine children, Marla was a natural caretaker and loved everyone, especially children.
Marla grew up in Orem, Utah and graduated from Orem High. She learned how to work hard on the family fruit farm and enjoyed traveling the world. Her favorite place to visit was Israel and she even spent a semester abroad living there. After Marla returned from her mission she graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She enjoyed teaching third grade at Cottonwood Elementary School until her knight in shining armor entered her life. They had four beautiful children Robert, Elizabeth, Eric and Christina.
Marla was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in various capacities. She served a LDS Mission in Zurich, Switzerland. Her generous heart went above and beyond to bless the lives of those she was called to preside over. She was often found serving in the primary and nursery and loved being with and teaching children. She especially loved serving with the 8-12 year old girls and spent hours making holiday crafts, memory books, sending cards to the needy and engaging them in service opportunities.
Her Swiss mission companion, Dora Fuerer, and Dora’s brother Vinzenz came to tour the United States. Marla was invited to join them. While on the trip, Vinzenz and Marla fell in love. They were engaged, married and moved to Switzerland in two weeks. Their wedding day was September 18, 1976 and were married in the Prove Temple. They lived in Switzerland for 2 years and then moved to Sandy, Utah in 1979.
She made it her calling to bless everyone’s lives. She loved serving and care taking the elderly and those less fortunate. She was a friend to everyone and was bold and loving in sharing the gospel.
Marla owned and operated Love to Learn Preschool and taught for 15 years. Her darling preschoolers enjoyed the most amazing crafts, science experiments, holiday programs and had the most enthusiastic teacher ever.
A few of her favorite family traditions were Santa Claus day, 12 days of Christmas, making valentines, Sub for Santa and baking homemade goodies for others.
Marla loved being frugal and finding a great deal. She also loved shopping at outlets, thrift stores and dollar stores. She found much joy in finding treasures and bargains.
Marla loved music and enjoyed singing with children. She enjoys playing the piano and ukulele.
All were welcome at Marla’s table. At Thanksgiving and Christmas her home was full of foreign college students, neighbors, widows, individuals with disabilities; all were welcome at Marla’s table.
Marla loved her family above all, her favorite part of every year was the annual Berrett Family Reunion and she enjoyed scrapbooking these memories with zest and plenty of bright stickers.
Marla was always grateful, loving and focused on that which was beautiful. Marla was diagnosed with dementia at the early age of 53. Even in her late stages of Alzheimer’s she would say thank you for any service given, tell everyone “I love you” and comment on the beauties of nature around her. Despite her disease she always asked others “How can I help you?” or “What can I do to help?” Her positive attitude remained throughout her life. She uplifted others even in the midst of her own challenges.
Her unforgettable, joyous laugh and inviting smile will never be forgotten by her loved ones and friends. Come and honor her. The viewing will be Friday Dec. 8, from 6:00-8:00 pm and Saturday 9:30-10:45 am with the funeral service Saturday Dec. 9, at 11:00 am. The location of the viewing and funeral is 275 East 10600 S.
