Mark Hunter Redd passed away at home on his 87th birthday after a short illness. Mark was born December 19, 1927 to Alice Vera Hunter and Leland Wayne Redd. He enjoyed his childhood at La Sal, Utah, and graduated from San Juan High School in Blanding. He loved his time as an LDS missionary in the Northern States Mission (1947-1949), St. Petersburg, Russia (1997-1999), and two local service missions. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserve where he loved shooting on the 6th Army Pistol Team and teaching classes. He earned degrees from Utah State University in Animal Husbandry and from the University of Utah in Physics.
He met VeraLee Thurgood, the love of his life at Utah State University, and married her in the Logan Temple on May 3, 1951. Together for 63 happy and adventurous years, they have 5 children: Bruce (Wendy), Edward (Susan), Hans (Lisa), Ruth (Mike) Woodford, and Alice (Brad) Adams. They have 32 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren, with 4 soon to arrive.
He discovered early in life that he didn’t want to work for someone else, and spent most of his life self-employed. He considered himself very blessed, and was very generous with his means– using them to help many.
He loved life and was an avid gardener and adventurer. He took joy in exploring and learning about the world. He traveled to every continent, SCUBA diving wherever he could, making over 400 dives. He holds the record for being the oldest bungee jumper off Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe at the age of 84. He loved to be around people and was never happier than when he was planning a party. He had a song for every occasion and loved hearing his wife and children and grandchildren make music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wayne, Donald, Bruce, and Jack, grandchildren Stuart and Anna Redd, and Andrew and Brittany Woodford.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 on Saturday, December 27th at the South Cottonwood Ward (5600 S. and Vine Street). A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Murray Memorial Mortuary (5850 S 900 E) and Saturday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the church.
