Marilyn Osterloh Sylvester passed away peacefully on September 14, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 86. She was born on May 7, 1932 in American Fork, Utah to Marcus Arnold Osterloh and Sarah Violet Birk.
She was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah where she attended various schools including East High School and the University of Utah.
Marilyn was always fiercely independent and adventurous. When she was 17 years old she and a friend packed their bags and rode the bus across country to live and work in New York City. She also lived in Idaho, Colorado, and California before returning to Salt Lake City as a single mother in 1972 to resume her career with Utah Power and Light. She retired in 1987 after 25 years of service, taking with her a large circle of lifelong friends.
Marilyn loved music, theater, traveling, good food, playing Bridge, and other card games. She especially loved her Hand and Foot card group of 7 wonderful friends. They will miss her wit and her drive to win.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Lee Sylvester, who was the light of her life and her dearest friend; her brother Kent M. Osterloh, niece Stacie (Ryan) Williams, nephews James Burgess and Marc (Elizabeth) Osterloh.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister-in-law Judy Osterloh.
Marilyn’s life was guided by her favorite poem.
Faith
“When you have come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown; faith is knowing one of two things will happen. There will be something solid to stand on, or you’ll be taught how to fly.” ~ Patrick Overton
