On Tuesday, December 27, 2016 our sweet mother, grandmother, sister and friend Marilyn Elise Simmons, passed from this life to a wonderfully joyous reunion with her sons and many other family members.
Marilyn was born September 8, 1932 in Driggs, Idaho, to David and Isabelle Grover Simmons. She was the third in a family of eleven children. She grew up in Kanesville, Utah. She attended schools in Weber County and graduated from Weber High. She earned an associate’s degree later in life.
She married John M. Bartlett on July 9, 1952 in the Logan LDS temple. Though they parted ways, they remained good friends. They were often seen laughing and joking with each other at family parties. Marilyn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She had a strong testimony and loved the Savior.
She had various administrative positions throughout her career. At the age of 75 she retired from the Draper City Zoning and Planning Commission. She was the go to girl for everyone and often spent late nights providing meals and refreshments when planning meetings were taking place. She thoroughly enjoyed her job, the care and concern she put into it was evident to those around her.
Mom had many talents and accomplishments, but her claim to fame was that she was a Master Culinary Genius!! Mom could whip up meals in a minute. She had the ability to turn ordinary things into extraordinary things with almost no effort. We all loved when she tried new recipes. She taught us that food was meant to be enjoyed and savored. She took time to teach many of us how to be great cooks, her little tricks and special skills, something we will always be grateful for. The grandkids knew there would always be a tasty treat waiting when they visited. They looked forward with anticipation to those special times with Granny M.
Mom was a perfectionist, sometimes to a fault. We knew we would be doing things over if we didn’t do them right the first time. She taught us the value of hard work, the importance of following through on a promise, how to overcome challenges, and to strive to always be our best. Mom was our first and most important teacher and example. Each of us knew we were “her favorite!” She is genuinely loved by all of her family and will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her children Joy (Scott), Patricia (William), Kathryn (Douglass), David (Shara) and Eli (Hazel). She is also survived by 8 of her siblings, 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two siblings, her son’s Bruce and Thomas, and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, Holladay, Utah. Friends may visit from 9:45-10:45 a.m. that morning prior to services.
