Marilain Patterson Black

Marilain Patterson Black passed away on March 19, 2022, at the age of 95.  She was born January 31, 1927, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Joseph Sharp and Vera May Jensen Patterson.  She worked over 50 years in government and private jobs.  She retired from the VA Medical Center in January 1987.
She is survived by 6 sons and 1 daughter as follows:  Robert, Michael, John Patrick (Shauna), Bryan (SherriKay), Craig, Alicia (Richard) Brady, and Kevin (Michelle).  She had 24 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith James Black and a daughter, Karen Elizabeth Barfuss, both died in 2016; a daughter-in-law, Lesley Ann Black, married to Robert; a grandson, Richard Keith Black while serving a mission in South Africa in 1999; and a granddaughter, Rusti Lyn Bundy who passed away with pure love at 8 years old in 2013.
She believed in “Stay at Home moms” but always said, “You do what you have to do.”  She taught her children to be independent.  She worked 2 to 3 part time jobs at times to help provide for her family.  Her parents helped so much with the children, and, in turn, she took care of her dear mother during the last few months of her life.
She loved the Gospel and served as Sunday School secretary for 15 years, as a counselor in the Relief Society Presidency of the Midvale East 4th Ward, served a Stake Mission with her dear husband in Arizona, and in her 80’s she served as Compassionate Service Leader, Visiting Teaching Coordinator and other callings in Santa Clara, Utah.  She was also active in Family History and indexed over 1,300,000 names between 2009 thru 2019.  She and her husband moved from Salt Lake City, Utah to Sun City, Arizona in 1992, to Santa Clara, Utah in 2003, and back to the Salt Lake Valley in 2012 to be near their children.
Funeral services will be held on March 30,2022 at 11:00 am with a viewing one hour prior to service at Memorial Murray Mortuary; 5850 S 900 E, Murray, Utah, 84121. Another viewing will be held on March 29, 2022 from 6-8pm at the same location. Interment to follow at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary.
