Marcus (Marc) Rood

April 27, 1941 — July 16, 2016

Our sweet husband, dad, and grandpa, Marcus (Marc) Rood, passed away surrounded by friends and family on July 16, 2016 at the age of 75. Marc was born to Cora Hählen and Marcus (Max) Rood on April 27, 1941 in Rotterdam, Holland.
Marc was born to a Jewish father and a Christian mother during Hitler’s reign. His father was taken to a concentration camp when Marc was only 4 years old and in the hospital with tuberculosis. His father died in the concentration camp, Dachau, 3 days before it was liberated. Marc and his family immigrated to Canada when he was 12. He quit school in junior high because he felt that he wasn’t learning anything new. He asked his mom if he could get a job and she said yes, thinking that he would not get one. Much to her surprise, he got a job at a logging camp where he harvested trees, fought fires and helped build a dam.
At age 16, Marc immigrated with his family to the United States. He joined the Marines as soon as he could and served for 4 years. This enabled him to work as a computer programmer at Hill Air Force Base. He traveled often for his job – he even moved his family to Egypt for about two years. Marc was a hockey fan and coached for both of his sons’ teams. He retired in 1996, at age 55. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and created beautiful pieces for friends and family. He made a cradle for each of his children when they had their first child, being sure to use their favorite wood. It is a piece that they will cherish.
It was during his time in the Marines that he met his sweetheart of 54 years, Shirley Eldredge. Marc gave Shirley a sob story about not getting any letters and told her she would never write him. Shirley accepted his challenge and they began their love story, writing letters back and forth in creative ways, such as on toilet paper. They were married on July 20, 1962, by her father, Bishop Harold Eldredge. They went on to have five children and eleven grandchildren.
Marc was very generous and loyal, and loved his wife, children, and grandchildren more than anyone or anything else. He was intelligent and a fierce debater; he especially loved debating politics with his “liberal” daughters and son-in-law. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and a great laugh. He will be missed greatly. Members of the family take comfort in knowing that they will meet again through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Marc was preceded in death by his parents, his sister: Corrie Urriola, his in-laws: Harold and Anna, and his sisters-in-law: Carolyn Murphy and Ione Bush. He is survived by his wife: Shirley Eldredge Rood, children: Marcus Rood (Jolynn), Matthew Rood, Michelle Anthony (Andrew), Angela Daley (Michael), and Amy Rood, and grandchildren: Nicholas, Emily, Jeanne, Edward, Alex, James, Marcus, Benjamin, Julianna, Jacob, and Elizabeth.
