Born June 27, 1927 in Peerless, Utah, Marcellino Gonzales grew up in Standardville. He was one of ten children born to Seferino Gonzales Alvares and Maria del Patricinio Rodriguez Gutierrez, who emigrated to the United States from Mexico around 1920. After living briefly in Colorado, his parents settled in a mining community located in Spring Canyon west of Helper, Utah where his father later died in a mining accident February 15, 1957.
Marcellino served in the United States Army between World War II and the Korean conflict. Upon returning home with an honorable discharge from the service, he learned a trade and became a licensed electrician and was an active member of local I.B.E.W. 354 for the rest of his life. He served in various union leadership positions and taught courses to journeymen in-training.
Marcellino met Betty Gene White at the Utah Power and Light substation on South Temple in Salt Lake City, where she was employed as a switchboard operator. They married June 7, 1952 and together raised six children: Marce Alvarez, Juan Miguel, Rico Antonio, Martin Claud, Margene, and Joseph Maka.
Like his mother, Marcellino had a green thumb and enjoyed working in the garden. He started many of his gardening projects from seed. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family. His ability to save and manage personal finances was an example to everyone that knew him.
While living in Sugar House and Sandy he was an active member of a Catholic Parrish. He always donated many hours of service to the Latter Day Saint Bishop’s warehouse whenever invited. In spite of not being LDS, he supported three sons on missions for that church.
His greatest legacy was 60 years of marriage to his wife and the family they raised together.
Marcellino passed away October 23rd, 2019, surrounded by his children and loved ones. He is survived by Juan (Olga Gonzalez), Rico (Monica Kmetz), Martin (Pia Condemarin), Margene, Joseph and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his wife, Betty Gene White, son Marce Alvarez, parents Seferino & Maria, and siblings, Soledad (Charlene), Mariano (Meano), Gregoria (Goya) and Juanita.
Per Marcellino’s request, instead of a funeral service there will only be a simple graveside dedication. In lieu of flowers, please donate used clothing to a shelter or charitable organization that will not resell.
