Our beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother, Lynda Jeane VanCamp, passed away peacefully in her home following a long, valiant battle with cancer on August 10, 2016. While we will miss her deeply, we are grateful for the release from the pain she had long endured.
Lynda was born on August 11, 1944 in Lewiston, Idaho to Lora Jeane Hill and Arnold Raymond (Mac) Megenity. Her father was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, so the family moved many times during her childhood, including a three-year stay in Spain. As a child, she enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, knitting, and collecting dolls — hobbies that continued throughout her life. She graduated from Lompoc High School in Lompoc, California. Lynda met her husband, Kenard Allen VanCamp, as she reluctantly hung back while a flock of females approached him as a recently returned missionary. He doesn’t remember any of the other girls as his entire attention was on her, and as he drove away, he said, “That’s the girl I want to marry.” Then he just had to convince her. It worked and they were married civilly at an LDS church in Lompoc on April 19, 1963 and sealed the next day in Los Angeles Temple April 20, 1963.
Ken and Lynda were married for a few years before welcoming their three children into their lives: Michael Allen VanCamp, Lora Jeane VanCamp Boyle, and Jeremy Cole. Once she had children, she cared for and loved them wholly. Lynda was everything to her family: heart, breath, life. She enjoyed caring for her own children so much that she wanted to become a foster parent as well. Throughout her life Lynda invited more than twenty foster children to live with her family. Some stayed for a few years; some stayed for several months, but each was the recipient of her kindness, love, and devotion. Every day Ken and Lynda strove to live more like the Savior in their compassion for others and welcoming those who were going through struggles into their home. Lynda never judged people; she just accepted and loved them for who they were. She was a gentle soul, never raising her voice, always reaching out with a helping hand. The family unit was of utmost importance to her, and every minute revolved around them. Together they enjoyed boating, motorcycle riding, camping, horseback riding on a couple of horses they owned, water skiing, and roller skating at the rink down the road.
Lynda spent most of her married and family life in Discovery Bay, California. She loved serving in her calling as a librarian, and also served as a counselor in her ward relief society presidency. She used her talents from her youth to hand stitch blankets to donate to women’s shelters, hospitals, and overseas to military personnel. If you knew Lynda, you probably were a recipient of a blanket (or multiple blankets) at some point.
Lynda was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, and was delighted when she was declared cancer free three years later. However, in 2009, it came back as bone cancer. Through the years of failing health and suffering, Lynda and Ken radiated a blessed love that continued to grow through the years of declining health. Lynda was a warrior, and never complained. She fought through the pain and continued to reach out with love and kindness to others. Ken and Lynda walked a spiritual path as a team and focused on their eternal purpose in day-to-day commitment to each other. Their purpose continues, separately, but united as one — Lynda joining family members who have passed on and Ken striving to live worthy of her here on earth.
Lynda is survived by her husband Kenard Allen VanCamp; children Michael Allen VanCamp, Lora Jeane (Jim) Boyle, and Jeremy (Megan) Cole; father Arnold Raymond “Mac” Megenity; brother Alan Raymond (Chris) Megenity, sister-in-law Marsha Megenity; grandchildren Derek and Shawn Boyle, Kelsey and Megan Weybright; nieces Carrie (Kasey) Root, and Brandy (Frank) Coffaro. Preceded in death by her mother Lora Jeane Hill Megenity.
