Luann Schuhle Banta

April 29, 1954 — March 19, 2017

Our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter, Luann Nedaline Schuhle Banta, age 62, died peacefully surrounded by her beloved family on March 19, 2017. She died as she lived with grace and dignity, having great faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Luann was born April 29, 1954, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Harold Walter Schuhle and Margaret Harris. Her parents raised her well, encouraged her education, and taught her to fully live life. She joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a young girl in Massachusetts and yearned for the day when she could come to Utah and attend Brigham Young University. She always claimed, “I wasn’t born in Utah but I got here as fast as I could.” She graduated from BYU in elementary education and began a lifelong career in teaching. She taught as did the Savior with great love for children. She, too, was a master teacher! She taught 30 years in the Davis, Jordan, and Granite School Districts and more recently was a teacher at James E. Moss Elementary where she enjoyed great enrichment with her fellow professionals and academics.
Luann married her companion of 38 years, Robert Elbert Banta on October 5, 1979, in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised five beautiful and successful children. Luann had a deep love for the Savior accompanied with obedience to His commandments which she instilled in her family. Luann often spoke of her greatest achievement, that of raising and loving five children, to her friends and even those around her in line at the fabric store. Her children treasure their experiences with her and her testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. She recently placed on the wall of her home a sign of challenge to all: in the eternities there can be “No empty chairs!”
Luann was a faithful servant to both her fellow beings and her God. She busily sewed and quilted, generously sharing her creations with friends, neighbors, ward members, and even some people she never met. When asked if she wanted to travel or see the world while she was still able, she said, “No, I just want to stay home and make as many quilts as I can.” She was sensitive to the needs of others and grateful for any service rendered to her. When she could barely talk, near the end of her life, she made a list of all those to whom she needed to send a “thank you.” She served faithfully in the church as a Primary and Young Women’s president, in addition to other assignments in the Relief Society; her most favorite calling, however, was to serve and teach the children of the Primary.
Luann is survived by her husband, Bob of Salt Lake City; a son, Travis Robert Banta (Amy) and grandchildren Lee Robert Banta and May Ann Banta, all of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Natalie Margaret Banta of Valparaiso, Indiana; a son, Spencer Lee Banta (Natalie) of Lehi, a daughter, Ashley Jean Banta Badger (Robert) and granddaughter Madelyn Luann Badger of Salt Lake City; and David Walter Banta of Provo.
Luann is also survived by her mother, Margaret Harris Schuhle of Albany, New York; a brother, Thomas Martin Schuhle (Jean) of Albany, New York; and sisters, Jean Elizabeth Schuhle Weigel (Hank) of Denver, Colorado and Karen Margaret Schuhle Williams (Don) of Rochester, New York.
