Lome Naea

September 24, 1957 — November 24, 2020

At age 63, Lome Naea passed away in West Valley, Utah on November 24th, 2020. Like his wife before him, he was blessed to depart this mortal life surrounded by loved ones. In 2011 he underwent a triple bypass surgery which was eventually followed by several other health complications including kidney failure and dementia. Despite these drastic physical and cognitive changes, his faith, humor, and love for others remained firm and resilient.
Lome was born September 1957 in the village of Lufilufi, Samoa. His love for his home country was reflected in the music he enjoyed. He loved Samoan music for its poetic lyrics and the life lessons it contained. In his later years he often spoke of his upbringing in Samoa, telling stories about fishing, childhood brawls, hard work and family life in the islands.
Like most fathers who provide for their families, he worked hard. But also played hard and enjoyed all the good that life had to offer. He was a man large in stature and humor, who could be identified by a distinct joyful laugh. That joy and laughter extended to various sports throughout his life. He participated in the typical sports played in the islands including cricket, volleyball and rugby. After migrating to the United States, he found a love for the game of golf and in the early ‘90s joined the Utah Islander Golf Association (UIGA). Many of Lome’s most loyal friends derived from this group of golfers. For him, friendships were easy to come by because of his humility and sincere love for others.
Lome met his eternal companion Elisa Afitu in California and married her on February 8, 1980. As the eldest male and female in their families, they were often looked to for support and guidance. Their relationship and influence brought both their families together as if they were one family. Despite their passing, their hope was these two families would remain united for generations to come. Their love for one another was seldomly expressed but clearly evident. While together, they drove each other crazy but truly went crazy when they were apart. Losing Elisa was a source of great heartache which he mostly expressed in private. Although his loved ones mourn his death, they take comfort knowing he is reunited with his beloved “Lisa”.
Lome is survived by his son Jerome Taulima and daughter-in-law Melveen Tutasi-Naea; and by his siblings Saofaiga Naea (Mele Naea), Leiite Naea, Tintali Naea, Elaine Delacerna (Kia Delacerna Sr.), Mulo Naea (Erin Naea), Tusi Naea (Josie Naea), Tagi Ulugia (Paulo Ulugia), Mose Manuo (Daneece Manuo).
Lome is preceded in death by his eternal companion Elisa Afitu Naea; his parents Taulima and Pepe Miriama Naea; his sister Fela’ia’i Naea; and brother Feterika Manuo Sr.
His last wishes were to discontinue dialysis treatments and enjoy his life surrounded by loved ones and his favorite Samoan foods. His requests were honored, and his final days were filled with Samoan music, great food, family and laughter.
