Francell Lois Ogden Livingston Mons, 92, passed away of TMB (Too Many Birthdays) on September 17, 2014 at the Cache Valley Assisted Living Center in Providence, Utah. Although given the name Francell, she was always known by family and friends as Lois.
Lois was born in Salt Lake City on December 27, 1921 to Victor William and Edythe Doble Ogden. She was the eldest of four children. She graduated from South High School in 1938 and post-graduated from West High School in 1939. Following graduation, Lois worked at W.T. Grant department store in Salt Lake City and transferred for one year to Los Angeles. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she returned to Salt Lake and began work at Kress Co. department store where she met her future husband, Virgil Francis Livingston, who was also working there. Virgil later joined the Navy, but returned to Utah on leave so that he and Lois could be married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 6, 1943. Virgil was stationed in Marshfield, Oregon, and Lois joined him for several months before returning to Salt Lake City where her daughter, Claudia, was born in 1944. Lois and Claudia moved to San Diego, where Virgil was then stationed. When the war ended, they returned home to Salt Lake, and in the summer of 1948, Virgil and Lois bought their first home at 1659 West 8th South. The home is still owned by their son, Kent. During the Korean War, Virgil was reactivated and stationed in San Diego. Lois and Claudia joined him there, and lived in military housing. When Virgil was released from the Navy, they returned to their home in Salt Lake. In 1952, the birth of twin sons, Kent and Kevin, was very exciting for the family. Lois’s youngest daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1954. Lois embraced the challenge of having three children in two years, and gave her children many chances to ski, swim, and attend other activities. Lois and Virgil divorced in 1971, and Virgil passed away in 1992.
In 1975 Lois married Emil Kurt Mons, and they made their home in Salt Lake City. Emil’s children were already grown, and their marriage blessed Lois with even more grandchildren. Emil and Lois enjoyed traveling, and toured Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with Cheryl following her LDS mission to West Germany. They also made many trips throughout the United States. Emil passed away in 1987.
Throughout her life, Lois worked many places, including Sears Roebucks and the Salt Lake Knitting Works. Lois worked at Mt. Bell Phone Company (later U.S. West) for 23 years, from March 2, 1963 until her retirement in March 31, 1986. Lois was a wonderful seamstress, and enjoyed cross-stitching, embroidery, knitting, quilting, and crocheting. If you can name it, she did it, and did it beautifully. In her retirement, she was involved in quilting and sewing projects for humanitarian causes. Lois was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many church positions, including Young Women President and Relief Society President. Lois and Kevin lived next door to Cheryl and her son, Duncan, for nearly twenty-five years, which allowed Lois to remain at home until she was 91. Lois especially enjoyed attending the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah with her daughter Cheryl. Lois’s grandson, Duncan, accompanied them ever since he was five years old.
Lois was preceded in death by her younger sister Diane Hauck, her brother in law Jack Silotti, and her stepson David Mons.
She is survived by her siblings, Joyce Silotti and Steve Ogden; her children, Claudia (Michael) Beeny, Kent Livingston, Kevin Livingston, and Cheryl Livingston; her grandchildren, Lance (Pamela) Beeny, Jennifer (Lance) Parker, and Duncan Livingston; and her great-grandchildren, Tara Beeny, Havila (Michael) Nelson, Devon Beeny, Riley Whiting, and Mirae Whiting.
She is also survived by her stepchildren, George Kurt (Olivia) Mons, Douglas Mons, Richard Mons, Kathleen (Wayne) Hicks, and DyAnn (Randy) Nielson.
