Lois Coates

January 11, 1947 — November 21, 2020

Lois Marie (Russell) Coates, age 73, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2020 surrounded by her family. Lois was born on January 11, 1947 in Concordia, Kansas to Benson Hanson Russell and Della Maxine Slaughter.
As a young child Lois’ family moved to Jerome, Idaho, where she grew up and graduated from Jerome High School in 1965. She was a member of Jobs Daughters from 1962-1965. She earned a degree from Stevens-Henager College in Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning
to Idaho. Lois started dating Larry Wayne Coates a couple years after returning, although they had known each other since the 7th grade. They married on August 3, 1968 in Jerome, Idaho. After they were married, and Larry completed his college degree, they made
the decision to move to Salt Lake City, UT. Here they created a loving home and raised 2 children.
Lois was a stay-at-home mother while her children were young. When they were older, Lois went back out into the workforce as a secretary for a small engineering firm, and then as an Office Manager for Sylvan Learning Center. After her retirement, Lois volunteered at the Heritage Center in Murray, UT (now known as the Murray Senior Recreation Center), where she made many close friends. Here she used her talents to sew, craft and create many keepsake items, and even received an award for the most volunteer hours given.
Lois is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Larry Coates, her children Kimberly (Dustin) McKinney and Todd (Kim) Coates, her 4 grandchildren, Braxton McKinney, Sierra McKinney, Emily Coates and Ryan Coates and her sister Cynthia Hoekstra.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents Benson and Maxine Russell.
We have lost an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and sister who was pure in heart and always put other people first. She loved and supported her family, and we will miss her every day.
We would like to thank Lois’ Intermountain Medical Center’s Neurology Care Team. The Neurologists and ICU nurses provided the best care we could have asked for.
A Memorial Service will be held for immediate family on December 11, 2020 at 2 PM. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a Zoom meeting will be available to those who would like to join.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in the name of Lois Coates to Southeast Christian Church 1881 East Vine Street, Murray UT 84121 https://southeast.cc/give
