Lloyd Owen

d. November 30, 2021

On November 30, 2021, Lloyd V Owen, passed away in Loveland Colorado where he and his sweetheart had recently moved to live with their daughter Chaille. Lloyd was born to Vincent E. Owen and Lucile M Nielsen on February 12, 1933 in Rigby Idaho. He grew up in Idaho Falls with his sisters, Beth Lords, Javan Nuttall and Barbra Harman (deceased), and had an older brother, Ronald Keith Owen, who died as an infant. The family had also lived for a time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Lloyd graduated from high school in Idaho Falls and went on to study accounting at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in 1952. As a result of his time at BYU, and as anyone who knew him was aware, Lloyd was an avid BYU fan throughout his life. While at BYU Lloyd met, serenaded with song on his ukulele, and proposed to the love of his life, Peggy E Tuel. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple and have been married for more than 68 years. Peggy and Lloyd raised 6 children during their time in Alaska and in Utah, first with three boys, Rick, Terry (deceased), and Kevin, and then three girls, Chaille, Stacy and Melanie.
After graduation, Lloyd and Peggy decided to look for an adventure and sought work “out of country.” He always said he started at the top of the alphabet looking for work in either Alaska or Australia. As providence would have it, his first job offer was as an accountant in Anchorage, Alaska. Lloyd and Peggy promptly moved the family to the “Last Frontier,” driving the Alcan Highway in the middle of the winter in 1958-59 and arriving in Alaska just as Statehood was announced. Lloyd eventually changed work in Alaska and became the Controller for RCA on the White Alice project providing communications services to the State for many years. Later Lloyd was a Bank President, a Real Estate Developer, an entrepreneur, and a Commercial Contractor.
Lloyd’s true passion and focus were always to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, his family, and service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In 1961, at 28 years old, he was called to be a counselor in the first Stake Presidency organized in Alaska. Later he served as Branch President, Bishop, Stake President, and in many other callings. In 1985 he was called to serve with Peggy for three years as the Utah North Salt Lake City Mission President. After that service, he worked for a number of years at the Church headquarters in the LDS Missionary Department, before retiring and being called to serve as Mission President of the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC). After their service at the MTC, Lloyd and Peggy were called to serve again in 2007, this time returning to Alaska, as the Anchorage Alaska Temple President and Matron.
Lloyd loved the gospel of Jesus Christ, missionary work and serving others. He loved spending time with family, fishing, flying his Alaska Bush plane, and visiting with people, but especially family and friends. His wife, children, their spouses, his grandchildren, their spouses, and his many many great grandchildren will greatly miss him and his cheerful company.
The family requests that any flowers and notes be sent to the LDS Stone Creek Stake Center in Bountiful Utah at 1476 N. 300 W. Bountiful or, as an alternative to flowers, ask that you make time to take a friend/family member to lunch to celebrate the gospel of Jesus Christ and your time together. If you want to talk about missionary work, Alaska, BYU, or fishing, Lloyd would appreciate that.
Funeral services will be held on December 20th at 11:00 am at the Stone Creek Stake Center in Bountiful Utah with a 1hr prior viewing.
