Linda Marian Bird Thorpe

May 17, 1941 — December 1, 2018

Linda Marian Bird Thorpe passed away December 1, 2018 at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, only 7 months after the passing of her eternal companion. She was born May 17, 1941 in Salt Lake to Charles Reid and Marian Bricker Bird. Linda was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 8 in the Salt Lake Tabernacle exactly 100 years after her 2nd great-grandmother joined the Church in England. Linda and her six sisters were proud to be the “Bird Girls” on McClellan Street.  She graduated from Olympus High class of ‘59. On September 24, 1962 Linda married Philip Dayton Thorpe in the Logan Temple. They enjoyed almost 56 years together.
Linda received her AA in Fine Arts from Rochester Community College at age 53 graduating with a 4.0. She loved to make quilts and did so for every baby born in the family or neighborhood. Linda worked as a legal secretary, medical transcriptionist at Mayo Clinic, and retired from JetBlue at age 75. She lived in 20 different homes during her married life and in 3 different states.
Linda was an active church member her entire life serving in every organization – throwing herself into each calling with the ultimate devotion, creativity and love. But her favorite callings were as “Mission Mom” to the missionaries of the Spokane Washington Mission (1980 – 1983) and as companion to her beloved husband on a Humanitarian Mission to Moscow, Russia (2004 – 2005).
Linda is survived by her 6 children: Devin (Gail) Thorpe, Tiffany (Henry) Black, Natalie (John) Child, Jeremy Thorpe, Bricker (Bridgett) Thorpe, and Christian (Ciara) Thorpe. Niece: Stephanie (Mark) Wade. 7 grandchildren: Dayton, Adam, Avery, Allie, Kaitlyn, Emerson and Sophie. 7 step-grandchildren: Riachle, Reagen, Courtney, Catie, Markessa, Alyssa, and Dalton. 5 step great-grandchildren (with one more on the way). Also survived by 5 sisters: Sherry (Kent) Linebaugh, Annette Mackay, Connie Taylor, Marcia (Greg) Fullmer, Julie (Danny) Waters and boundless extended family who were recipients of her annual birthday $2 bills. Linda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sister Donna Jean Bird Sumner, and infant brother Charles Bricker Bird, and five brothers-in-law.
