Lila Marie Salm Hansen

April 25, 1925 — October 2, 2019

I was born April 25, 1925 in my Grandmother Staker’s house in Magna, Utah. This was a fitting place for me to be born as I grew to love my Grandma dearly. I was the first child of Emil “Molly” Salm and Kathryn Margaret Staker. I would later be joined by two siblings – James Philip and Mary Pamela. I had a wonderful childhood in Magna and garnered many lifelong friends there.
I attended Cyprus High School and during that time I played bugle as a member of Magna American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. During high school, I worked at a soda fountain and it was there I met the love of my life, Carl Edward Hansen. We were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 14, 1945 after Carl returned from serving overseas in World War II.
I had worked briefly for Kennecott Copper and Steel Engineers. Carl attended Optometry School in Chicago and I worked as a secretary to support him. After returning from school we settled in Provo, Utah. There I joined a group called the Culturettes and the Lady Lions Club. We belonged to the Edgemont Ward where my favorite church calling was being a den mother. I also taught sewing to 4-H girls.
We eventually moved to Salt Lake where I worked many years for Deseret Book. I loved to sew and do needlework. Afghans I made won 2 blue ribbons at the State Fair. My hands were always busy crocheting afghans until my eyesight failed me and I was no longer able to continue.
In Salt Lake we joined several bowling teams and were active in the Lions Club. We spent many special occasions with “The Magna Group” and lunches with the “DBC” girls.
Carl and I loved to travel. We attended Lion’s Club conventions all over the state; loved to vacation in Hawaii and were blessed to be able to travel to Europe for our 50th anniversary. I looked forward to watching Jeopardy daily to the extent I would not answer the phone when it was on.
I was the mother to 3 children, Sheri Lynn, Eric Salm and Kathryn Janell. I loved my children dearly to my dying day. I loved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was an active member and had many callings throughout the years including preparing the program for Sacrament meeting for 21 years.
I was grateful for all those who helped allow me to stay in my home – my nephew, Steve Wilson, my neighbors, the Charnholms, my dear friend, Reed Nelson, and my special friend Collette Winward; my sister Mary Salm as well as many other family members and friends. I greatly appreciated the kindness of the firemen from United Fire Authority who came to help when I was unable to help myself. I was able to attend many activities my last summer with President Nelson’s birthday party being my favorite activity and the last time I was able to leave my house. I was appreciative of the staff of 3-W for the concern and support they gave to my daughter and me in my last days. Many thanks to IMC Hospice, especially Anna and Cynthia.
I am survived by my children, my sister, 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. I am so excited to be reunited with my dear Carl, my parents and my brother as well as my Grandma Staker and other dear friends who have gone before me.
