Leslie James “Jim” Hammond

March 30, 1939 — June 18, 2022

Leslie James (Jim/Pappy) Hammond, 83, passed away June 18, 2022 after a short illness. He was born March 30, 1939 in Breckenridge, MN to Floyd and Vera Hammond. He married Joyce Quinlan on December 12, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hammond; sisters Jan Quam (Gerald) and Frances Woodbury (Woody); son James Hammond (Sara/mother Nancy Link); son-in-law Phil Sustad (Betsy); daughter, Michelle Ferraro, daughter Deanna Wall (Cory), grandchildren Jesse Eadie, Steph Eadie, Miles Sustad, Peter Sustad, Carver Hammond, Taliana Hammond, Kaiya Hammond, Nick Runyan (Ashley), Luke Runyan, Jake Runyan, Michael (Booney) Ferraro and Vanessa Reel (Dalton) and 11 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Betsy Sustad; previous wife, Deanna Hammond; and stepson, Michael Ferraro.
Jim grew up in North Dakota, played baseball on the State Championship Team, graduated from Wyndmere High School and joined the Marine Corp in 1957. He was an artillery officer. In 1964 he had the option to retire or re-enlist. He chose the retire with an honorable discharge rank of Captain. We are all thankful for this as shortly after the Vietnam War broke out.
He had a degree from North Dakota State University in electrical engineering. He then worked as a sales rep for Westinghouse, and Gould Shamut travelling for many years. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and started an independent sales office in Colorado, ran Capital Electric Supply and a Metal Fabrication company in AZ. He lived in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, California, Colorado, Washington and Utah.
Jim was a very good-natured guy – he had a best friend in minutes if he was in line at the grocery counter or a ball game watching his grand kids play. He loved to talk and tell stories. He was always up for anything and liked adventure. He had a great sense of humor. He entertained the medical staff, even as he was ill in the hospital, making little jokes all the time. He was a loving husband, caring father, and an involved grandfather, staying in touch thru FaceTime and watching grandkids’ events in-person and online. He will be greatly missed by everyone!!!
A Memorial Service will be held July 2, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at a Latter-day Saint chapel at 2535 Douglas Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. Jim will be laid to rest in September at Fairview Memorial Cemetery in Wahpeton, North Dakota.
