Leroy (Lee) Caton Pierce

January 30, 1944 — February 17, 2020

Our loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Lee Caton Pierce, 76, passed away suddenly due to complications of Parkinson’s Cognitive Dementia on February 17, 2020, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lee was born January 30, 1944, to Farrell Melvin Pierce and Esther Eleanora Quaschnick Pierce in San Mateo, California. His greatest joy came from loving and serving his family, friends, and those he came in contact with. His witty sense of humor and positive outlook brought smiles to everyone.
He attended San Mateo High School where he was a member of the gymnastics team. After graduation he earned an Associate’s Degree from College of San Mateo and then served in the Uruguayan Mission from 1963 to 1965 where he developed a great love for the South American people and culture, as well as Book of Mormon history, which he continued to research and share throughout his life.
Following his mission, he attended Brigham Young University where he met Cheryl Stott; they were married in the Oakland California Temple in 1967. After graduation in May 1968 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He completed officers and pilot training, and served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the Strategic Air Command where he developed a great love for flying. During this time Lee and Cheryl were blessed with two children, Aaron Miles and Nicole Cheriese.
After Lee’s service in the Air Force the family moved to Fremont, California where he began his career as a train operator for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). He continued his love for flying by obtaining a private pilot’s license and purchasing his beloved Cherokee Six. He delighted in flying with his family and they often took short trips to see Grandpa on his farm and other friends and family near the Bay Area.
After retirement Lee enjoyed splitting his time between Fremont and Salt Lake City to be with his children and grandchildren.
Lee is survived by children Aaron Pierce (Bihong), Nicole Wintch (Brent); grandchildren Jordan, Camilla, Dante, and Xander; and siblings Bonnie Washington (Milton), Kurt Pierce (Nancy), sister-in-law Debbie Pierce, brother-in-law Randy Collette, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, brother Brent Pierce, and sisters Jeannine Collette and Colleen Green.
We wish to express our great appreciation to the staff of Auberge at Aspen Park Memory Care Center for showing loving care and respect to Lee and his family during his final few months.
