Leona Marie Weidauer Rees
April 12, 1933 ~ June 1, 2017
In Remembrance…
Leona Marie Weidauer Rees, 84. Passed away on June 1, 2017, in Ogden Utah surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter. She was born on April 12, 1933, the second of eight children born to Sidney Weidauer and Helen May Jimason. She married Richard John Rees in 1958, they later divorced. She had one daughter, Valerie whom she raised with devotion.
Leona graduated from Granite High School in 1951 and attended BYU. While there she made good friends with roommates and worked for the Men’s Athletic Department…activities that gave her stories which she shared for the rest of her life!
She was a highly valued and accomplished secretary. Her career included 35 years working for Hercules Inc. later known as Alliant Tech. She received commendations in recognition of her work, and her work ethic–never missing a day for years.
She was a faithful member of the LDS church where she served in many callings including relief society teacher and young women’s president. She was a skilled teacher and would spend hours preparing lessons which would be not only uplifting but also contained her unique sense of humor. After retiring from her job, she quickly took on another “job” as a missionary for the LDS Church serving in the family history center on Temple Square. Her original 18-month mission ended up extending for 7 years and was only ended due to health issues. She considered her mission a sacred duty and as with her workplace ethics, never missed a day unless she was extremely ill.
Leona was a talented seamstress. She made dresses for herself and numerous members of her family. There was little she couldn’t do with a sewing machine. She made prom dresses, baby clothes, poodle skirts for every girl in her family, cowboy outfits, as well as two wedding dresses…her own and her daughter’s. In addition, Leona was skilled in knitting and crocheting and completed countless Afghans as well as baby outfits and sweaters. Her generosity meant that she seldom had any of her own projects to wear herself, however, family members enjoyed them immensely. In spite of these considerable accomplishments, there is no question that Leona’s greatest joy came from her family. Beginning as a devoted daughter to her father and mother whom she adored, Leona’s commitment to being fully involved in her family knew no bounds. She felt blessed to spend hours with her mother working on projects for younger siblings, cooking or any other activity. If there was a ballgame, dance recital, birthday, holiday celebration, church activity where anybody was performing, a play, a piano recital, etc. you knew that Leona would be there. She was generous not just with her time but also with her resources and she did her best to recognize each member of her family with a birthday or Christmas present or at least a card as long as she was able to do so. She enjoyed offering support to members of the family who were serving missions. And whether she was known as “Aunt Leona”, “Aunt Noni”, or “Aunt Belona” …she loved her nieces and nephews dearly.
Leona was a dedicated mother and grandmother. Her sacrifices in raising a child on her own were extensive and she worked hard to be sure that Valerie always had what she needed and a fair amount of what she wanted as well in spite of being a single parent.
Leona was proud of her grandchildren whom she treated to birthday outings where she would buy them a new outfit and take them to lunch, leaving each one with memories of being special and uniquely loved by “Grammy Rees”. Each of their accomplishments brought her pride and happiness and was celebrated and no doubt bragged about to anybody who would listen!
We love you and miss you and look forward to seeing you again.Service Information
