Lena (Speters) Lewis

October 10, 1935 — August 9, 2021

Lena (Speters) Lewis died at the age of 85 on August 9, 2021 at Cottonwood Creek Assisted Living in Salt Lake City, UT. She was born on October 10, 1935 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Johannes and Lena Van Tussenbroek Speters.  She married Ivin Kerry Lewis on May 12, 1961, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.  She is survived by her younger brother Antoon (Lisa) Speters, son Marc (Anjannette) Lewis, and granddaughters Jessica and Marissa.  She is preceded in death by her parents, older brother Martinus “Martin” Speters, husband Kerry Lewis and daughter Kerilee Lewis.
Lena (“Leny” to her friends) grew up in Rotterdam and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Rotterdam after being taught by missionaries there.  She immigrated to the US in 1953 as a teenager, along with her parents, Antoon, and family friends. They joined Martin who was already living in Salt Lake City, and set out to make a new home and community.  She initially worked at Pullman Wholesale Tailors and later went to Librarian School and worked at the Utah State Library in Salt Lake City.  Her husband Kerry was the love of her life and they enjoyed many adventures together, including lots of travels to southern Utah where Kerry was from. Lena’s life revolved around Kerry, her children, and her granddaughters, all of whom she loved dearly and did everything she could to support and nurture.
Lena had a welcoming and open personality, and all who took the time to get to know her knew they had a friend.  She was blessed with a close-knit group of friends who also came over from Holland, and they shared so much over the years with visits and daily phone calls. Lena also loved getting the extended Speters and Lewis clans together for any occasion, and cherished her many, cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. Lena was the primary caregiver for her dad, mom and Kerry in their final years. And, in recent years, Lena often mentioned how much she appreciated the support of family, friends and caregivers during her long struggle with Parkinson’s.  She will be missed.
