Leland Ray Smith (Smitty)

February 3, 1927 — June 24, 2020

Leland is finally in the arms of his loving wife and reunited with our Lord. He was born in Peru Indiana to William Guy Smith and Lucile Slegel Smith. He was one of seven children, preceded in death by five.Leland will be missed by many, he will be missed very much by his Utah family, Heather (Kevin) Durham and Amanda Twitchell. He is survived by his Sister Ruth Vigar (Indiana) and Beverly (Idaho)
He has 204 nephews and nieces and is survived by 194. Anyone who knew Leland knew how much he loved his sister Ruth and her children. He had a special love for his niece, Connie, and to the very end she always was able to make him smile and calm him down when nobody else could. Leland had a very large heart and if he loved you, you never questioned it. Leland had many friends who he treated as family. He loved to give, and was always going out of his way to give things to his friends. He loved to banter and keep people on their toes. Leland was a very proud veteran of WWII. When he enlisted in the Army, he was never to leave the United States during his service time due to an injury as a child. Leland made sure that he was going overseas and was very proud of ‘losing’ his orders which stated STATESIDE DUTY ONLY in one-inch red lettering. By the time it was discovered he was on the ship and on his way to Europe. Leland told many stories of his time in the war. He met his best friend, Bob, in Germany. Germany is also where he met the love of his life Erna (Ann). Leland always spoke very highly of Erna’s family, and the time he spent in Germany will always be remembered as the best time in his life.
Leland was a wonderful man with a big heart, though he felt he had to hide that and put on a grouchy demeanor. Anyone who knew Leland knew that he took pride in being ornery. He loved hunting and his years driving trucks for PIE before their closure.
He thoroughly enjoyed the ability to go on the Utah Honor Flight in his later years. Heartfelt thanks are extended to Carolyn and Jay Daily for helping to make that happen.
Special thanks are also extended to Theresa Jones from Envision Hospice. Theresa went far above expectations to show Leland love and support whenever she was with him. Their interactions always made everyone around them smile and she was the highpoint of his week.
Leland requested no services; this will be addressed at a later date.
