Lawrence Gonzales

April 30, 1930 — February 23, 2018

Lawrence Gonzales died in his home February 23, 2018 in West Valley City, UT due to complications after a surgery. He was 87.
Mr. Gonzales was born on April 30, 1930 in Brighton, Colorado to his parents Pedro and Guadalupe (De La Cruz) Gonzales. He served as Cpl in the army during the Korean War. He graduated from BYU with a degree in Education in 1957. He married Fay Day in 1968. They lived in Price where both Lawrence and Fay taught at grade schools. He moved his family to Hunter and taught in Salt Lake City, where he became principal at Rose Park Elementary, then Franklin Elementary Schools. He was the first Hispanic principal in Utah.
When he retired, he remained active at his church, SS Peter & Paul. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife also enjoyed activities at Harmon Senior Center, especially choir.
Mr. Gonzales is survived in death by his wife, Fay; son, Lawrence; son and daughter-in-law, John and Jennifer; daughter, Diane; brothers, Carlos and Antonio; sister, Elvira (Garcia); two grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He is preceded by siblings, Mary (Lopez), Victor, Lino, Pete, Julia (Martinez), Frank, Richard, Rose (Sandoval), Easter (Romero) and John.
A viewing will be held March 1, 2018 at 6:00 and Rosary at 7:00 at Memorial Mortuary 6500 S Redwood Road. Funeral services will be March 2, 2018 at SS Peter & Paul Church 3580 W 3650 S at 11:00 with a viewing at 10:00.
