Larry Smith was born in 1946 in Idaho to parents Richard L. Smith and Jean Hammer. He was raised by his loving grandmother Lorena Smith. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1964. He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1965. He graduated from Ricks College with an Associate of Science in 1966, and received a B.S. degree for General Engineering from Idaho State University in 1971. He married LaRae Smith in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1970, and recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. He moved to Utah in 1976, and lived there for the remainder of his life.
Larry worked for many companies as a computer programmer and software engineer when these were new fields. He witnessed many changes in computers from large room sized computers to small handheld computers of today. Larry had a logical mind and he enjoyed learning and applying computer programming languages. His favorite computer system was the AS400.
Larry held many positions in his church and served for many years in the Jordan River Temple. He served two Church missions, one Stake mission while he was attending college, and one tech mission after he retired. He was passionate about family history and worked hard to complete temple work for his family and others.
A few words that describe Larry are faithful, honest, logical, dedicated, playful, and kind. Larry had a great sense of humor and was always ready to shoot back a playful pun or clean joke. He took his responsibilities seriously. If he gave his word, you could count on him 100%. Larry was very compassionate, and worked hard to help others in any capacity that he could.
A few fun facts about Larry: He loved music, especially the Beatles, and songs from the 1960’s and 1970’s. He enjoyed watching movies, some of his favorites were John Wayne, Harry Potter, and movie musicals such as The Sound of Music. His favorite vacation spot was Yellowstone National Park. His favorite sports team was NY Yankees. He also had a talent for building model cars, for woodworking, and for drawing detailed schematic plans, which he later built into reality.
