Lamar Owen Dew

June 16, 1927 — December 1, 2016

Our dear father and grandfather, LaMar Owen Dew, returned home to his Heavenly Father on December 1, 2016, in Salt Lake City, Utah. LaMar was born June 16, 1927, in Tooele, Utah, to Samuel Phillip and Edith Marian Barrus Dew. He was the third of four children. After his father died when LaMar was four, his stepfather moved the family to several states around the country, working what jobs he could find during the Depression. In high school, LaMar ran track, lettering in the sport as a miler.
During World War II, LaMar was drafted into the U.S. Army just months before Japan surrendered. LaMar always said that they heard he was coming and ran scared. After the war, LaMar served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Mission, at times going without purse or scrip.
When he returned home to Michigan, he met Veda Carrie Lindsey from Tennessee at church. They were married August 25, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, and then traveled to Utah where they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Provo, Utah, where LaMar attended and graduated from Brigham Young University. While they were there, they were blessed with a son, William (Bill). LaMar and Veda moved to Tooele, Utah, so that he could teach elementary school there, which is when their son Lindsey was born. LaMar and Veda then moved to Granger, Utah, where two daughters, Rebecca and Mary, blessed their home. After several years in Granger, the family moved to Holladay, Utah, where they were blessed with their third daughter, Rachel. LaMar and his dear wife, Veda, were married for 64 years. They had a sweet love for each other all the days of their lives.
LaMar taught in the Granite School District for more than 30 years. He touched countless lives through his teaching. He worked with special education children for years. It brought him great satisfaction to hear of his former students, which happened often. LaMar was always a hard worker; he taught school during the day and worked as a carpenter in the evenings and on Saturdays. He taught his children the value of hard work, often taking them with him to roof a house or lay a hardwood floor.
LaMar enjoyed long-distance driving and was good to take his wife back to her home in Tennessee often. He had a firm testimony of the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ and was active in the LDS church, holding many positions.
LaMar was loved by all, and especially adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren for his generosity and his ability to talk like Donald Duck. He supported several of his grandchildren on their own LDS missions. They will forever have fond memories of popcorn and ice cream at Grandpa’s house.
LaMar is survived by his children William S. Dew (Jolene) of Sandy, Utah; Lindsey Phillip Dew (Vicki) of Cottonwood Heights, Utah; Mary Dew South (Michael) of Heath, Texas; and Rachel Dew Allen of Dallas, Texas. LaMar has 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. LaMar was preceded in death by his wife, Veda, in October 2014 and his daughter Rebecca Dew Watts (John) in March 2011.
