February 24, 1967 — May 27, 2014

Kristen Petersen Nelson, age 47 (known to her grandchildren as Oma) of Layton UT, passed away on May 27 2014.
The viewing will be held from 9:00am to 10:45am on June 3rd 2014. The funeral service will follow at 11:00am at the Layton LDS Chapel, 2000 N 590 W, Layton, Utah. Bishop Donald Parker of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will conduct the service. The burial will then take place at 12:40pm at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, 1640 E Lakeview Drive, Bountiful, UT.
Kristen was born February 24th 1967 in Oxnard, California to Frank and Karlyn Petersen. She married Jay Nelson on September 18th 1985 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Jay subsequently joined the Air Force and they began their new life in the military together. She lovingly and patiently supported her husband throughout his 25-year military career. During this time, she had the opportunity to touch lives in many places such as England, Guam, Kansas, and Colorado. Although Kristen often found herself acting as a single parent while Jay was deployed, her children never doubted her love for her country and the military.
As a youth and young mother she loved water skiing, snow skiing, and scuba diving. She even earned her rescue diver certification while living in Guam with her family. Her days were always filled with the things she loved most, whether it was a favorite book or movie or spending each Saturday at Air Force football games. All who knew Kristen will never forget how much she loved to serve those around her. She had an unconditional love that came naturally to her as a mother to 4 children and a foster parent in both Kansas and Guam. Her final days on this earth were spent volunteering at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. No one can match the selflessness with which Kristen served her family and friends.
She had an immense personal love for each of her children and worked tirelessly to raise them in a way pleasing to our Heavenly Father. Kristen spent many nights tending to a sick child or ensuring that school projects were completed. Even in times of hardship she was adamant that her children never go without, often at great personal sacrifice. Her love for her Heavenly father has radiated throughout her family. Kristen is survived by her husband Jay; daughters Stephanie and Kelsey; sons Kyle and Benjamin; and grandsons Colton and Ryker.
Kristen was truly an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and child of our Heavenly Father. She loved all those she came in contact with and will always be remembered as a shining example of how we can serve our Heavenly Father by serving our fellowman. Words cannot describe how much she will be missed.
