Kay R. Powell

Kay passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 30, 2024, at 88 years young in the comfort of her home in Millcreek, Utah. She was born in Salt Lake City, November 2, 1935, to John Van and Itha Stevens Rowley. She graduated from South High School and attended both BYU and the U of U. Kay married William "Bill" Robert Powell on November 2, 1957, together they had 3 daughters. She had a strong work ethic throughout her life and was an example of mixing hard work with fun. She was a breast cancer survivor. Kay retired from the Federal Government and weekend work at St. Marks Hospital. Followed by part time work at the U of U Neuropsychiatric Institute, fully retiring at the age of 86. She was a lifelong bowler later added golf. Bowling in winter and golfing in summer up until earlier this year. After Kay was widowed from her sweetheart Bill in 1982, she shared her life and was loved by her partner and buddy John Ward. Known as Grandma K or "Big Red" for her red hair and big fun personality, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her joy. She loved spending time with them and was always present at their special activities and life events.

Kay is survived by daughters, Stacie Powell, Linda Ahlander (Brent), Julie Gunnerson (Marty). Ten grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Her siblings, Merrill (Carole) Rowley, Sharon Williams, Ralph (Leola) Rowley.

She is preceded in death by her parents, spouse, and one granddaughter. 

Graveside services will be held on September 10, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 E. 7800 S. in Cottonwood Heights. A visitation will be held prior from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary at the same address. Casual attire is suggested. In lieu of flowers, gather with family and friends and have fun with Big Red spirit.
