Kathryn Hill Hess, 90, of Salt Lake City, Utah passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 3, 2014. She was born on June 27, 1924 in Logan, Utah to Parley and Hazel Hill. She grew up on a farm in Cache Valley and loved all animals (with the exception of birds). She always had a beloved dog or cat companion in her home throughout her life.
She attended Logan High School, graduating in 1942. She also attended Utah State University where she received her teaching degree in Physical Education and Music in 1946 and was a member of the Theta Upsilon Sorority. She was very active in athletics and was a Letterman on the women’s Track Team at both Logan High School and Utah State University. She was affectionately nicknamed, “Zephyr” due to her speed and success in winning races at BYU Invitational Track Meets. She was an avid Aggie and Utah Jazz fan and rarely missed basketball and football games.
At Utah State she met her eternal companion Keith J. Hess and was married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 18, 1946. While Keith pursued his college education, she taught school at Sandy Jr. High School in Jordan School District. She was a very committed educator and after her children grew older, served as a substitute teacher at Olympus Jr. High School well into her seventies.
She was a fantastic cook whose fried chicken, rolls, cookies, Christmas candy, etc. will be sorely missed by the members of her family and her neighbors.
She was an incredible mother who never missed an activity her children participated in. She attended countless baseball, football, basketball, volleyball games, track meets and band concerts. She had a very giving spirit, always thinking of others and had many lifetime friends who she kept in contact with through the years. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and worked in the D.U.P. museum for many years. She was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings, especially in Young Women's sports.
She is survived by her son Stephen (Julie) Hess and daughter Lori (Faris) Karaghouli. Also by grandchildren Channing, Andrea and Scott. In addition, she had 4 four great grandchildren, Taran, Cameron, Andrew and Kellan. Preceded in death by her husband Keith and brother Willard Hill.
Many thanks go to her wonderful neighbors Bob and Eris Kirby who were so helpful after Keith passed away. The family would also like to thank her hospice nurse Lacey Banks and those who helped care for her at Legacy House Assisted Living.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Holladay 26th Ward, 4601 South Chapel Drive (2565 East) at 12:00 Noon. Viewings will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at the Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary from 6-8 p.m., and one hour before the service at the church.
