Kathleen Johnson Wiens
September 16, 1922 – March 8, 2020
Born September 16, 1922 in Brigham City to David Peter (nee Jorgensen) Johnson and Olivia Sabine Johnson, the youngest of six children. In 1924 family moved from Mantua to Salt Lake. Attended Granite High School and decided to join her siblings in Los Angeles, where they had gone to find work. She stayed with her sister, while working at Clifton’s Cafeteria. There she met a co-worker, Martin Wiens. They married in 1941 just a few days before the onset of WWII. Dad enlisted and was sent to the European Battle ground. During this time, mom moved back to Salt Lake to live with her parents and await the birth of their first child. After the war, dad joined her in Utah. Their intention was to relocate to California, but housing was in short supply, so they stayed here while Dad found work all over the U.S. and overseas. In 1955 they moved to Sandy, being one of a few families to live in such a “far away land”!
Mom was a member of the LDS church and faithful in her callings in Primary and the Relief Society. In 1979, dad converted to the faith and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Soon after, they were called on a mission to St. George, where they spent some of the happiest days. Upon their return, they were ordinance workers in the then new Jordan River Temple for nine years. They traveled far and wide over the next several years. Just shy of their 65th wedding anniversary, dad passed away in October 2006.
Mom was an avid walker and bowled on leagues for many years. She played piano by ear and was the Relief Society pianist/organist for many years. For enjoyment, she loved reading, crossword puzzles, baking, gardening and shopping at ZCMI and dining at the Tiffin Room.
Mom is survived by her four children, Marsha, Brent (Dorothy), Jeri (Doug), and Lori, 9 grandchildren, 11 great and two great-great children , and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to nieces Sandra (Rick) and Sally (Jim), who brought her much joy with their loving support and to her “adopted son” and neighbor, Dave, who watched over mom and helped in so many ways. Thank you to her wonderful and supportive neighbors and friends who visited often and lifted her spirit. Thank you to Bristol Home Health & Hospice, the wonderful nurses, Jolene, Ashley, Madi, Lauryn, and also, Alan and Laura. And to Canyon Creek Assisted Living, Tyson and Magda, for their compassion and care.
Graveside services will be on Thursday, March 12, noon, at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary at 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights. No flowers please.
