Katherine Meadows Larsen Dickson

Katherine Meadows Larsen Dickson passed away peacefully March 9, 2019 in her home. She was born in Ripley Mississippi on September 15, 1931 to Jacob Jackson Meadows and Ada Gladys James. Katherine is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dee Miner Dickson; and her infant son, Stephen Joel Larsen.
She is survived by nine children Phyllis (Allen), Renae (Earl), Connie (Bill), Kathy (Barry), Jim (Marianne), Alan (Ruth), Mike (Laura), Nathan (Jennifer), Emily (Jeremy); 4 step-daughters; Diane (Craig), Judy (Don), Deb (Craig), Janean (Mark); 42 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren; and by her brothers and sisters: Kyle, Kenneth, Kluann, Karma, and Kevin.
Katherine, known as Kathy or Kate to many, was raised in rural Ripley, Mississippi. Her family’s home sat on 146 acres of hardwood forestland. They had no running water and she learned to work hard doing the chores that came with farm life such as caring for hundreds of chickens and selling and delivering eggs as part of the family income.
Katherine was a gentle soul who had a love for birds including purple martins, wrens, whippoorwills, blue birds and for small “critters” such as squirrels, terrapins, lizards, and toads. She and her siblings loved playing in the woods where they had many adventures finding arrowheads and Civil War musket balls, swinging on grapevines and catching crawdads.
 
In 1949 Katherine met and courted James Earl Larsen while he was stationed at Millington Naval base in Memphis Tennessee. They were married at the courthouse in Ripley, Mississippi on Dec 31st, 1949 (Later divorced). After Katherine graduated from Shady Grove High School and Jim was discharged from the Navy they moved to Utah where they raised their nine children living in the Millcreek area of the Salt Lake Valley.
In 1981 Kate began working at Pioneer Valley Hospital. It was while working there that she met and fell in love with Dr. Dee Dickson. They were married on July 9th, 1984. A year or so later she and Dee moved to Sandy where they both lived for the remainder of their lives.
Kate made many life-long friends everywhere she lived. She had the amazing talent of discerning the needs of others and serving them. She was very talented at woodcarving and though she would deny it, she was a talented artist who loved creating beautiful things. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening and cooking. Cooking delicious food was often her way of serving others. At one time she took Greek cooking classes and created amazing Greek dishes for her family and friends. Those who received a gift of her baklava were blessed! She also mastered the art of making and decorating birthday and wedding cakes.
She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including Relief Society president at least twice and as a primary teacher to many children in her current ward. Her favorite calling was serving as a temple worker. She served in the Jordan River and Draper Temple baptisteries for 20 plus years.
More than anything Kate loved and served her family. She was our mother, our teacher and our example. We will miss her greatly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday March 16, 2019 at 9:00 am at the Falcon Hill ward chapel, 2130 E Gyrfalcon Dr. (10000 South). Interment will be at the Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South.
