Karla Violet Carson Harward

July 13, 1925 — March 19, 2016

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away Sat. 19. Mar 2016 surrounded by her loving family in Salt Lake City, UT.  She passed away five years to the day since her husband, Herschel J. Harward passed away.  Born July 13, 1925 to Franklin Thornton Carson and Viola Anderson Carson in Kingston, UT.  Karla was the 3rd of three children.  She spent her early youth in Kingston and helping on her grandfather’s ranch and helping her grandmother in the kitchen.  In her spare time she enjoyed horseback riding, swimming in the river, fishing, hiking in the mountains, and sleeping under the stars with her sister Therva.
After her eight grade year, her family moved to Manti for her freshman and sophomore years which were difficult financially for the family.
At the end of her sophomore year Karla and her family moved to Richfield to find better employment in the summer of 1941. She attended Richfield High School for her Jr. and Sr. years and served on the High School Planning Board and graduated in 1943.  To help the family make ends meet, she worked at JC Penny’s and then for the local dentist.  The boys in town would graduate and then go off to war so the available suiters were few until after the war when she met Herschel who had served in the Navy during WWII and they were married September 20, 1948 in the Manti Temple.
Karla was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, served as Relief Society president, sealer with Herschel in the Jordan River Temple, and many other callings. Her greatest joy in life was her family and serving them. She was preceded by her husband Herschel “Hershy”; by her parents, sister Thurva Anderson Hunt and brother Thor Carson.  Karla is survived by her daughter Cheri (Andy) Schmidt, sons Dennis (Beverly), Kelly (Leslie), Karl, 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
