Karl Ernst Fritz Dieckmann

February 25, 1923 — June 18, 2019

Karl Ernst Fritz Dieckmann, 96, passed away peacefully from complications of a fall, on June 18, 2019 in Las Vegas, NV. He was born on February 25, 1923 in Stettin, Germany to Albert Friedrich and Johanna Ebert Dieckmann. Karl graduated from technical school in Stettin. Shortly after he was drafted into the German Army, where his proficiency with Morse code led to his assignment to serve as a radio man during World War II. He served on the Russian front until he was wounded by shrapnel in his leg. After returning to Germany to recuperate, he was reassigned to the North African Campaign, where he served as a radio man in the tank division. When the German Army surrendered in Africa to the British in 1943, Karl became a prisoner of war. He was detained for 4 years in Oklahoma before returning to Germany.
After the war Karl’s family moved to Erfurt, Germany where he met his wife Kathe Wutzig and had a son, Edgar. Then he met his wife Ursula Linder. In 1953 he and Ursula and their two children, Monika and Hartmut, immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah. There they had two more daughters, Carol and Debbie. In 1976 he met Anna Slok and her four children Bill, David, Sandra, and Tony. They were married on July 24, 1976 until his death. Due to health conditions he moved to Las Vegas in 2016 where he was cared for by his daughter and her family until his passing.
Karl worked for the Salt Lake City Sanitation Department for 30 years until his retirement. He loved painting and making things with his hands. He was constantly fixed up his and Anna’s home.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years Anna; daughters Monika Tonnesen, Salt Lake City; Carol (Eric) Taylor, Las Vegas; Debbie (Al) Leech, Spokane; Sandra (Charles) Blacksher; Kamas; sons Edgar (Nancy) Dieckmann, Sandy; Tony (Lisa) Slok, Riverton; David Slok Salt Lake City; Bill (Carol) Slok, Virginia; sister Ingrid Whitlock, Mayfield, Utah; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his son, Hartmut Dieckmann, his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123 on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow.
