Juliet Maathuis

Juliet (Julie) Jensen Maathuis was born October 26, 1915, in Twin Groves, ID, which is near St. Anthony, to Wilford Leo Jensen and Georgia Maughan, the second of ten children. She passed peacefully away on April 11, 2014, in Salt Lake City at the age of 98. When she was very young, the family moved to Burton near Rexburg, ID, where she was raised. She graduated from Ricks College with her teaching certificate, then taught school in Winder, ID, near Preston, for four years. She worked a short time in California and then returned to Idaho to teach school in Burton and was even the Principal for a year during WWII. She served a summer mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Washington state. Her companion had a cousin in the Army Air Corp at a base nearby who would drive over on their P day to take them grocery shopping, etc. Juliet and the cousin, Cornelius (Matt) Maathuis, began corresponding when she returned to Winder. They were married Nov. 2, 1945 in the Logan LDS Temple after the war ended.
The Air Force took them first to southern California and then to Ft. Worth, Texas where they lived for 9 years. Their daughters Arlena, Phyllis, and Christine were born while there. In 1955, Matt retired from the Air Force and they moved to Burton, ID, to be near family and attend Ricks College. The college was changed from a 4 year to a 2 year school about the time they arrived, so in 1957, they moved to South Salt Lake where Matt could finish his degree at the U of U.
Julie was a devoted mother, member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, friend, mentor, 4-H Leader, DUP member, ward and stake Relief Society leader, Visiting Teacher, Mutual, and Primary teacher over the years. She was last called as RS counselor at the age of 75. She always put others needs before her own. She visited the lonely and shut-ins. She enjoyed traveling and made many trips to visit family and church history sites from California to Colorado to Illinois to the East Coast. Her trip of a lifetime was a two week trip in Europe in 1990.

She is survived by daughters Arlena Camp, Phyllis (Bill) Hall, Christine (Steve) Taylor, 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brother Stanley (Mary Jane) Jensen, sister Zola (Walt) Mullins, and sisters-in law, Mona Jensen and Edna Jensen. Preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings Mildred (Lorin) Johnson, Loy Jensen, Heber Jensen, Quincy (Aleen) Jensen, Loa Jensen, Grey (Delores) Jensen, and Dewey Jensen.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, 11 a.m. at the South Salt Lake Stake Center, 2280 S. 300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends and family may call at the church, on Tuesday evening from 6 -8 p.m. or Wednesday at the church from 9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
