Julie Ann Empey

January 16, 1948 — June 12, 2020

Julie Ann Empey, Age 72
Our mother passed from this life on June 12, 2020 in Holladay, Utah. She was born on January 16, 1948 in Twin Falls, Idaho, to loving parents Mary Lorraine Anderson Empey and Garth Robison Empey. Mom grew up in Holladay, Utah, and graduated with distinction from Skyline High School. She attended the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and then a Master’s degree in special education.
During her time at the U, Mom spent two summers working in the Grand Teton/Jackson Hole area. She loved to hike in the mountains, and she treasured every opportunity to visit the Tetons. She instilled in her children a great love of the outdoors, and she took them camping, hiking, and exploring as often as possible. She also encouraged her children to develop their talents and interests, spending many, many hours at soccer games, football games, ballet practice, drama productions, and piano recitals.
Mom was a dedicated and very gifted educator. She worked with children with unique learning and behavioral challenges, and they loved her for her grace and patience with them.
Our mother was a faithful, lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in every auxiliary and in many leadership positions, and she loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In her later years, she devoted many hours in researching her family history, and in recording the life stories of her parents and other family members. She especially enjoyed developing close relationships with extended family through her family history efforts. She cherished the stories of her pioneer heritage and took care to share those with her children and grandchildren.
Mom is survived by her children: Karyn Weitl (David), Erik Baty, David Baty (Kristina Balfour), Annalise Lange (Andrew), and Krista Stockseth, and by her grandchildren: Madeleine, Kelson, and Laralynne Gustafson; Gabriel and Owen Lange; and Raul, Nancy, and Noah Stockseth. Her children and grandchildren were the light and joy of her life. She is also survived by her brother David R. Empey (Jill), whom she loved deeply, and by many loving cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Garth and Lorraine. Mom enjoyed a very close relationship with her parents, and she cared for them tenderly during their last years. She missed them tremendously, and we are comforted that there has been a joyous reunion as she is with them once again.
