Joyce LaVerene McCoy Hicks

April 5, 1928 — April 13, 2025

Joyce entered this world in Effingham, Illinois, as the second daughter of John (Pete) Emmett McCoy and Beatrice Maudette Byers McCoy. She would tell you she was born and raised dirt poor. She often reminisced of “home” (Altamont, Illinois) and her weekends spent walking out to the old McCoy farm to spend time with her grandma McCoy and uncle Sam. As a young lady, she worked various jobs to help her momma keep their single-parent family afloat. She worked in mom Langford’s café, where she undoubtedly learned to drink her coffee black and boiling hot, and worked as a seamstress at the local pants factory.

Joyce married Carl (Bud) Edward Hicks May 22, 1948. Their anniversary was a date she shared with her younger sister, Mary. Bob and Mary had decided to drive to Henderson, Kentucky, to get married, so Joyce and Bud rode along and made it a double date to remember. Times being tough, Joyce and Bud loaded their old pickup with everything they owned, two dogs, and two pet raccoons, and moved to Utah in 1950. The future looked brighter there with plenty of work and places to live. As it turns out, it was a great place for them to settle down and raise their family. Joyce and Bud had two daughters, Terry Lynn (Schlosser) and Kim Marie (Froscheiser).

Joyce was the epitome of true grit- she worked hard for years at the Tooele Army Depot in the tire shop and radio shop, and once in a while, she’d put on a pair of nylons and go to work in an office. Hard work fulfilled her, and she did it to ensure a better life for her posterity and to set a standard for that posterity to measure up to. She was tough as nails.

Joyce lived her life on the tip of her tongue and completely unfiltered, she was not afraid to tell you exactly what she thought. If you didn’t pick it up from her words, you’d get it from her facial expressions. She was feisty to the end. Some thought she had a really fun sense of humor, while others cringed in anticipation of what was going to come out of her mouth.

Joyce was, is, and always will be the absolute best grandma, great-gram, and GG in the whole world. She is survived by her daughters: Terry Schlosser and Kim (Rick) Froscheiser; her grandchildren: Tobie (Matt) Warner, Jolene (Jeff II) Jolley, Jason Schlosser; her great grandchildren: Whitnie (Ty) Craner, McKenzie Jolley, J.C. (Ashley) Davis, McKay Jolley, Tyrel Warner, Aaron (Jenni) Davis, Logan Warner, Paden Jolley, Dalton Jolley, Mariah Schlosser; and her great-great granddaughters: Sunny and Quinn Craner, and her great-great grandson: McCoy Davis, who proudly carries her maiden name.

She now joins those who’ve preceded her in death -- all of them, she outlived them all… her parents; loving husband, Bud; siblings: Betty, Mary, Darrell, Charles; and son-in-law James Schlosser.

See ya when. We’ll be careful of the idiots out there!
