Joyce Scott Brewer passed away on March 8, 2024, at the age of 95. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 31, 1928, to Floyd and Mildred Scott. Joyce attended and graduated from Granite High School in 1947. She married Jack Myron Brewer on February 8, 1950 later divorced. Together they had 7 children: Robert Brewer, Leslie Mott, Cathy Atkin, Scott (Dee) Brewer, Janice (Rick) Smith, Jon (Vivian) Brewer, and Gary (Kimberley) Brewer. After the kids grew older, she worked as a surgical prep technician at St. Mark’s Hospital for two decades. Joyce was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, cousin, aunt, and friend. Her family was everything to her, and she provided a lifetime of selfless service for her family and others. She had a laugh that “filled the room with love and happiness.” She always kept a positive attitude, even during the trials in her life.
She loved cooking and baking for her family, and everyone had a standing invitation to Sunday dinner at her house. Her chili was famous and has been said to be the “finest chili this side of the Mississippi.” And her German chocolate cake had a way of disappearing “faster than socks in the dryer.” For years, she and her best friend and sister-in-law, Ruth, would go on a grocery shopping trip on Saturday mornings and then share a nice lunch afterwards (a respite from their combined 14 children). Joyce loved Christmas and picking out presents for her family. She would often have her Christmas shopping done before the end of August and she became known as “Mrs. Claus” to her family.
No one loved babies more than Joyce. She couldn’t wait to see and hold each new grandchild or great-grandchild after they were born. Her face would show pure joy as she held them, and she would always sing to make them laugh. Her memory will live on through her 10 grandchildren Jaren (Stephanie) Mott, Alex (Thom) Plasse, Lisa (Doug) Willardson, Eric (Annie) Brewer, Amy Brewer, Angie (Jerry) Goode, Sean Smith, Chantel (Anthony) Ryan, Ashley Brewer, Kaela (Nick) McCorkle; many nieces and nephews; her 11 great-grandchildren Joel, Jared, Jenna, Katherine, Miles, Clark, Tristen, Trent, Elijah, Isaiah, and Isaac; and great-great-grandchild, Evelyn.
She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Myron Brewer, parents Floyd Walter and Mildred Scott, sister Bonnie Brown, and sons-in-law Dave Atkin and Dave Mott.
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, March 25, 2024, from 10 to noon at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary located at 3115 Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights.
