Josephine Sorensen

April 15, 1930 — March 21, 2014

Josephine Winger Sorensen passed away peacefully on March 21, 2014, in West Jordan, UT after an extended illness.
Jo was born along with her twin sister Lora Jean on April 15, 1930, in Riverdale, ID. She was raised on a farm, learning to plow, cut and rake hay, pitch grain, milk cows, and harness horses. Her family moved to Preston, ID, when she was in the 11th grade, where she graduated from high school in 1948. Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator. She met her husband, Jim, at a dance in 1948; they courted for two years, after which they were married in 1950. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1958.
During their early years of marriage, Jo and Jim lived in several different locations, including Logan, UT, Grand Junction, CO, Arbon Valley, ID, Seattle, WA, and Salt Lake City, UT. They eventually moved to Idaho Falls in 1958, where they lived most of the remainder of their lives. After Jim’s passing in 1985, Jo remained in Idaho Falls until 2009 when she moved to West Jordan, UT, to be near her daughter.
Jo was very close to both her immediate and extended family members, and was greatly blessed by dear neighbors and friends. She enjoyed singing, square dancing, and traveling with Jim. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jo and Jean were not only sisters, but best friends throughout their lives, singing together in choral groups and at many Church functions, and raising their families together. They were also tightly knit with the rest of their sisters, gathering often, for reunions, birthday celebrations, and extended family functions.
Jo was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having a strong and vibrant testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She served in many positions in the Church, including twice as a Relief Society president, several teaching positions, and ward and Relief Society chorister. She served an honorable mission to Roanoke, VA, from 1990 – 1991, and served as a temple worker in the Idaho Falls Temple for more than 17 years.
Jo is survived by her daughter Peggy Jo Kennett (Scott) of West Jordan, UT, and sons Timothy J. Sorensen of North Ogden, UT, and Kurt W. Sorensen (Catherine) of Edgewood, NM, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, brother, Lorin Winger and sisters Zelma Hampton, Audra Case, and Jean Simpson. She was preceded in death by her parents Loren A. Winger and Hazel M. Williams Winger, husband James F. Sorensen, and her sisters Lorraine Darley and Bernice Condie.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 12:00 PM at the Idaho Falls LDS 26th Ward, 2025 Jenny Lee Drive, with Bishop Wayne Simpson officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:30 to 11:45 AM prior to services. Burial will be at the Ammon Cemetery, 2135 South Ammon Road, Ammon, ID.
