Joseph Lyle Welsh

May 30, 1928 — August 2, 2018

Joseph Lyle Welsh passed peacefully at his home in Kearns, Utah on August 2, 2018 at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beulah Faye Mayhew, Harris, Welsh and daughters Nancy Flores (Lou), Mary Chromek (Bob), sons Terry (Mary Kay), John (Janeen), stepchildren Bruce, Brian and Douglas Harris, Brenda Harris Ivie (Kim), 25 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Alme Welsh, his parents, brothers and sisters. Lyle was an amazing storyteller/comedian, enjoyed sharing his woodworking talents with friends and family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa.
Lyle was born in Elkader, Iowa on June 30, 1928 to Marjory Liddy and Raymond Welsh. He was the 5th of 7 siblings, and raised on a farm where they had to walk 2 miles to catch their school bus each day (apparently uphill both directions). Of special note his grandmother passed away while saving him from a fire that burned down their house when he was an infant. He graduated from Elkader High School in 1946 and was active in sports, as well as church activities. Upon graduation, he immediately fulfilled his dream of moving West where he began working for the Bureau of Reclamation. He married Laura Alme in Drake, ND on June 21, 1950 and immediately became a beloved member of the Alme family. Shortly following his marriage, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served time in Korea, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon returning from the War, he continued his employment with the Bureau. He also played semi pro baseball and volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, one of many volunteer activities throughout his life of service. After starting his family, he spent time in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, eventually settling in Duchesne, Utah until his retirement on April 18, 1986 after 38 years with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
In 1978 Lyle met Beulah Faye Mayhew Harris, at a local steakhouse in Duchesne Utah. One of Lyle’s favorite lines was “I walked in for a beer and walked out with a wife”, which was always followed by a hardy laugh and embrace between the two of them. Their forty- year love story was true and it was admired and felt by everyone that knew them! The two of them were never apart and they had a beautiful life. Lyle and B enjoyed traveling, gardening, square dancing, family activities and Notre Dame football. He was always the life of the party and will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. The two of them blended their families beautifully and created a legacy that will be carried on for generations to come. They resided in Duchesne until Lyle’s retirement and then relocated to Kearns, Utah.
