Joseph “Donald” Coleman
1929 – 2018
On Valentine’s Day, Don left this life to join his two sweethearts, Ellen Lorraine Pettersson and Barbara Joyce Bettridge Wickham. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 2, 1929 to Lilly Ellen Grames Coleman and Raleigh Okey Coleman. He was raised in Price, Utah, by his mother Lilly Ellen Grames Brotherson and grandparents Albert James Grames and Lilly Susan Bass Grames. He enjoyed his childhood with his brother Stephen and many cousins. He married Ellen Lorraine Pettersson on December 5, 1947 in Castle Dale, Utah and was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. After her death in 1998, he married Barbara Wickham.
He moved his family to Salt Lake City in 1954. He was one of the first to be hired on with the Salt Lake City Water Department. He retired with them after twenty-six years. He had a love for trains, planes, and horses. He achieved two of his loves with his horse Sandifix and obtaining his pilot’s license. His greatest love was his family. He was a father of ten children, and he made many sacrifices to always be able to provide for them. Anyone who had the chance to interact with him would quickly see he had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He had made life-long friends, and many others were touched by his kindness and love.
He is survived by Joseph Donald Coleman Jr., Carl Lynn Coleman, Linda Ellen Coy, Carol Diane Coleman-Lea, Stephanie Lorraine Talbot (Karl Anderson), Vesta JoAnne Harvey, Susan Eugenie Williams (Jerry), Julie Doreen Kynaston (Ryan), David Nicholas Coleman (Sindy), Kathy Carleen Nielsen, forty-five grandchildren, seventy-five great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wives Ellen Lorraine Pettersson and Barbara Joyce Bettridge Wickham, his parents and grandparents, his brothers Stephen and Lawrence Coleman, daughter-in-law Susan Larson Coleman and son-in-law Tom Coy, one grandchild, and three great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ray Morris, the staff and doctors at Jordan Valley West Valley Hospital and the staff at ST. Joseph’s Villa. Also, a big thank you to the staff at Summit Home Health and Hospice for the care of our father.
