John Wesley Whiteley

November 14, 1927 — June 3, 2022

John Wesley Whiteley, 94, died peacefully in his home on June 3, 2022 in Cottonwood Heights surrounded by family. Born on November 14,1927 to Pearl and Carrel Whiteley. He served in the Marines at the end of WWII and re-enlisted as an officer and served in the Korean War. John joined the church in April 1950, and married Ruth Holley, on June 14, 1950.
He graduated from CSU in 1957 with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He moved his family to Gunnison Utah until 1960 then moved to Sandy where he served as the state Veterinarian until 1963. He then opened Alta Veterinary Hospital and retired in 2008. John served as bishop twice along with several other callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints. He served in the community as a volunteer firefighter in Sandy while also providing veterinary services to the Salt Lake County K9 unit and Wildlife Rehabilitation. John was known for his integrity, kindness and commitment to his family, friends, community and Church. He will be greatly missed by all.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Holley Whiteley, Louise Stephens (sister), Carrel Clark Whiteley (father), Pearl Watson (Mother) and Betty Hale Whiteley (daughter-in-law).
John is survived by his six children, Michael & Shannon (spouse) Whiteley, James & Diane (spouse) Whiteley, David Whiteley, Holley & William (spouse) Petitta, Lisa & Joseph (spouse) Wade and Paula & John (spouse) Brome, his seventeen grandchildren, Karli Jo & Scottie (spouse) Hale, Nichole & Nate (spouse) Mitchell, Kara & Bryan (spouse) Foster, Brittany & Chris (spouse) Fiel, Jamie & Steven (spouse) Franson, Wesley Whiteley, Jacee & Chad (spouse) Ault, Kalee & Michael (spouse) Millward, Wade Whiteley, Maddisen & Joseph (spouse) Wagner, Mindy & Travis (spouse) Fillmore, Hayden & Ashey (spouse) Petitta, McKay & Chalese (spouse) Petitta, Jeremy Webster & Sunny Nielson, Janel Brotherton, Parker Webster, AJ & Shelby (spouse) Ford, his thirty-eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Amalie and McKynna Hale, Alyna & Jared (spouse) DeLaigle, Jordynn, Tryston and Tynlee Mitchell, Kamaryn, Kayden, Jace and Josephine Fiel, Dominick Herrera, Tyler Carlson, Jaxsun Carlson, Ethan, Quinn, Avery and Owen, Franson, Ryker and Shaylee Whiteley, Kenlyn and Dezlyn Ault, Shelbi, Jocelyn, Cheyenne and Taya Millward, Easton Petitta, Tilly Grace Wagner, Nolan, Hugo and Greer Fillmore, Knox Petitta, Baylee and Brock Canata, Kreu Webster, Brayden Brotherton, Riley Yanik, Drayden, Remi and Dezi Ford, one great-great grandchild due in July 2022. He is left by many nieces and nephews, including his niece Joy & Dave (spouse) Schuhmann.
A Special thanks to the Veteran Affairs for providing care for John through Encompass and Superior Home Health Agencies and their staff, his PA Christine Slack with AMG, and end of life care team provided by Inspiration Home Health and Hospice. Thank you to Marlene Burns, his nurses Nicki and Savannah, and his Aide Cassie. We are so thankful and grateful for all your love and services during this time.
All Viewing and Funeral Services will be held at his ward building at 7784 S. Highland Drive (2000 E.) Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121. The viewing will be held on Monday, June 13, 2022 from 6:00-8:00pm and Tuesday, June 14, 2022 from 9:00-10:30am. Funeral Services will immediately follow the viewing session on Tuesday at 11:00am. The interment will take place that afternoon (2:30pm) at the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, UT after the family luncheon.
