John Reynolds Thomas

February 3, 1943 — January 29, 2020

John Reynolds Thomas passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. John was born on February 3, 1943 to Ivan Mickelsen Thomas and Mildred Reynolds Thomas in Alamosa, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Karen Foster Thomas, his son Jeffrey Thomas (Wendy) and daughter Jenny Updike (L. Robert), ten grandchildren, and his sisters and brothers Marilyn Harmsen, Elaine Strunk, Lee Thomas, Joseph Thomas, Vaughn Thomas, Gail Thomas, Charles Thomas, Donna Pavlovsky, and Dianne Hostetter.
John grew up a southern Colorado farm boy where he learned the value of hard work. He was lovingly known as Johnny by his family and friends growing up. He attended Manassa High School, graduating in 1960. John served an LDS Mission in the Andes Mission from 1961-1963, which covered parts of Peru and Chile.
John met his sweetheart, Karen, at a dance at Brigham Young University where they were introduced by a mutual friend. They were married August 22, 1966 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. John and Karen always made a lovely duet pair and sang together often throughout their 53 years of marriage. They also loved to dance together, before “their legs don’t work like they use to before.”
John graduated from BYU with a BS in Accounting and began working for Lockheed Martin in Denver in 1969. In 1981, John was transferred with the company to New Orleans, Louisiana to their Michoud Facility as manager of finance. John and Karen made Slidell, Louisiana their home for the next 20 years.
He cherished his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in four LDS Temples (Atlanta, Santiago, Chile, Jordan River and Draper) and four years as a service missionary with Karen at the Bishop Storehouse in Slidell, Louisiana. He served as Church Auditor Trainer, with his wife as his companion, in Chile under the direction of the Area Presidency from 2004-2006.
John made friends wherever he went and you knew he loved you if he was teasing you. The hallmark of his life was service. He has spent the last 14 years living in Draper, Utah close to family, and there made many wonderful associations.
Funeral Services will be held at the LDS Chapel at 12100 S. 700 W. Draper, Utah, on Friday, February 7, 2020 with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 AM, a Funeral at 11:00 AM, and interment will take place at 12:30 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery, 6500 S. Redwood Rd., West Jordan, Utah.
