John Raymond Homer

March 29, 1958 — May 17, 2018

John Raymond Homer, 60, husband, father, grandfather, disciple, writer and friend died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on May 17, 2018.
Born in Ogden, Utah, March 29, 1958, the third child of Frederick Raymond and Phyllis LeNila Young Homer, John was raised on Laird Ave in Salt Lake City; he loved sports and played football, basketball and golf at East High School where he also served as President of his Junior Class.
John served faithfully in the England, Leeds Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1977 to 1979.  In addition, he served in many callings for the Church including early morning seminary teacher, High Council representative, bishop and, most recently, his favorite calling to teach Sunday School at the Utah State Prison.
John graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance prior to attending the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business where he achieved high honors.  He worked in various consulting capacities before joining OC Tanner Company where he eventually served at senior levels prior to leaving the company due to circumstances relating to illness.
John battled bi-polar disorder for decades and suffered numerous physical challenges – all with humility, courage, and great resolve.  Despite his trials, he held fiercely to his covenants and the Gospel he loved.  As a result, John had a keen interest in people – especially those who were confronted by illness and difficult circumstances.  He befriended everyone with open arms and a warm and knowing smile.  To help those who suffer he wrote The Silent Storm, a personal memoir detailing his crusade to dispel the myths and misunderstandings that surround mental illness, especially within a Christian context.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara and children Brooke Anne (Brian) Andersen, Saratoga Springs, Utah; Sara Mae (Jake Scott) Homer, Lehi, Utah; Elise Marie (Kurt) Hendricks, Lehi, Utah; Russell John (Makenna) Homer, Riverton, Utah; and Joshua Paul Homer, Holladay, Utah; ten grandchildren, and siblings Cynthia Lynn Grames, Julia Ann Johnson, and David Paul Homer.
John was a life-long Ute fan whose voice was loudly heard during football and basketball games, particularly against BYU.  He loved his wife, Barbara, his family, golf, the cabin in Millcreek canyon and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  John had an extensive library of old Mormon books which he read regularly.   He loved the history of the church and frequently talked of how it strengthened his testimony of the Gospel.
