John Paul (J.P.) Mattson

John Paul Mattson passed away on April 18, 2021 in Layton, Utah. He was born on July 22, 1936 to Hazel Thelma Spenst and Louis Mathias Mattson in Logan, Utah. He was raised there and graduated from Logan High School in 1954. He joined the US Army in 1956, and married Sharon Glauser in 1957. Together they had five children. Later divorced.
After serving in the Army, Paul got a job with Hercules Aerospace Inc., and worked there until his retirement in 1994. He married Marci Young in 1989 and they spent 27 years together until her passing in 2017. Paul had many hobbies, some of which were raising show pigeons, collecting coins, golfing, and rooting for The Utah Jazz while working at the arena. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had many friends and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his children Jody (Lon) Hendershot, Cindy (Randy) Hermansen, Patrice (Mick) Quigley, Tim (Linda) Mattson, Holley Mattson. Stepdaughter, Keri (Richard) Holt; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lou and Hazel Mattson, brother Lou Jr., infant brother Reed Dale, wife Marci, and grandson Taylor Mattson.
A special thanks to Sunridge Assisted Living and Memory Care of Layton for allowing him to be everyone’s “favorite, “The Facility Clown, and loving him until the end.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 11:00 am at Memorial Holladay Cemetery, 4900 South Memory Lane (1990 E), Holladay, Utah with a viewing for friends and family one hour prior at the same location. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Alzheimer’s Association, https://act.alz.org/donate play a round of golf, or go to a Utah Jazz basketball game.
