John Lindsay Chatelain

May 25, 1936 — August 16, 2018

A great man, the patriarch of our family, continued on his life’s journey on August 16, 2018. John Lindsay Chatelain, 82, passed away at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah. He was born on May 25, 1936, in Salt Lake City, the first child of John Milton and Cremona Bunn Chatelain. He attended elementary, Jr. High and High School in Salt Lake City, and was in the first graduation class of Olympus High where he submitted the mascot name of  “Titans”. He also organized and was president of the Key Club.
John was blessed with the special gift of music, with which he touched and blessed the lives of countless others throughout his life. He began taking violin lessons at the age of 5 and often performed with his siblings at church and other programs. At age 17, he won an audition to become the youngest member of the Utah Symphony at that time. He graduated from the University of Utah in Music Education (instrumental and choral), going on to receive an Elementary School Music Certificate and 30 hours toward an M.S. in Educational Administration. He joined the faculty at Granger High School as an orchestra and band teacher, conducted a chamber orchestra at Judge Memorial High School, taught students at the University of Utah, conducted many youth symphonies and summer programs, including the Snowbird/U of U Summer Youth Program. John performed often in church meetings and programs, funerals, and for family and friends, unselfishly giving of his time and talents in helping and uplifting others.
John truly loved teaching and maintained a private Violin Studio, averaging 20 students per week, throughout his life. He was an amazing teacher.
As a member of the Utah Symphony, he played thousand of concerts in Utah, the USA, and in many foreign countries, including many in South America, Europe, Virgin Islands, Mexico, and Hawaii. He performed in Carnegie Hall three times, and also in Washington D.C. John retired from the Utah Symphony in 2003 after 50 years of service.
John was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities including Bishopric counselor, Bishop, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Stake High Council, Stake Clerk, Ward and Stake music leader and choir conductor, and a faithful Home Teacher all of his life. He served as a Music Missionary in the Orchestra at Temple Square for 3 years.
John married Sharon Jensen (later divorced) and was blessed with six children. He married Linda Eardley December 16, 1972 and they were blessed with a daughter. They were married 43 wonderful years. John especially loved his family and being with them. He loved to travel and enjoyed golfing as a hobby.
John is survived by his children: Michael John (Lisa), David Lynn, Steven Paul, Jeffrey Don, Jennifer Gillespie (Robert), James Louis (Heather), and JoDee Lyn Childs (Larvas), 10 grandsons and soon-to-be first great grandchild (a Girl!), brothers Allen and Richard (Sara), sister Judy Vogel. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gordon Lynn.
