John D. Johnson

John D. Johnson, age 92, returned to his Heavenly home on May 31, 2020. He was born on January 12, 1928 in Moab, Utah to Milton Edwin and Nora Mae Dalton Johnson and was the 10th of 12 children. When John was 31 months old, his mother was called home due to complications of childbirth. His father later remarried Ruth Westwood. She and her five children joined the Johnson family and raised their children as one large family.
John married his sweetheart, Beth Brown on December 4, 1948 and they raised two sons. John served in the United States Army in both WWII and the Korean War. He was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne in Japan. He served with the 252nd transport battalion in Korea.
John worked in the commercial tire industry until he retired in 1985 as the store manager after 39 years at the age of 59. John was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he had many church callings. He loved serving with the youth where he created lifelong friendships. He served as the Bishop of the Cannon 7th Ward for seven years and Stake President of the Salt Lake Cannon Stake for 11 years.
John and Beth enjoyed their retirement as snowbirds, spending several winters in Quartzsite, Arizona. One of their greatest accomplishments was providing a mountain retreat, “Rocky Pines” for their family. This is a treasured destination where many memories are still being made by their family.
John enjoyed spending time in the mountains camping with his family. Telling stories around the campfire, hunting, fishing, going for short hikes and riding his ATV were some of his favorite activities.
In 2015, John was honored to go to Washington DC with the Utah Honor Flight where he was able to see monuments dedicated to those who valiantly served with him in WWII and Korea.
John is survived by his two sons, Dennis (Linda) of Murray, UT and Doug (Kathy) of South Jordan, UT. Grandchildren, Tammy (Byron) Meyer, Amy (Jonathan) Hallett, Monica (Todd) Nevenner, Tye Larson, Natalie (Bret) Smith, Brooke (Mike) Larsen, Kyle (Stephanie) Johnson, and Kacie Sanderson. 12 great-granddaughters, 11 great-grandsons, and one great-great-granddaughter. John is also survived by brother-in-law Jay (Dodie) Brown and sister-in-law Leah Stitt and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife Beth Brown Johnson, his parents, a great-granddaughter, Brenna Hallett, 16 siblings and several brother and sister-in-law.
An evening viewing will be held on Monday, June 8, 2020 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123. On Tuesday, June 9, 2020 an outdoor funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, with the interment to follow at the same location. Due to the landscape of COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, the gathering of attendees at the viewing and funeral service will be mostly outside under a large canopy. Please dress accordingly, and feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket. To participate from your own home via live stream, please view the instructions below.
