John graduated from Salt Lake City East High School in 1944. He served in the Army in 1946 to 1947 as a research assistant in a physics lab. He served a LDS mission in Hawaii in 1947 through 1949. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1951 and then continued with post graduate studies. In 1952 he moved to Denver Colorado to work with Dow Chemical as a nuclear engineer. John and Arthella met in Denver and were married in the Logan temple on May 4, 1953. Gaylanne and John III were born while they were in Denver. In 1957 John changed employers to do nuclear research with Westinghouse in Idaho Falls. David and Ramona were born in Idaho. In 1962 John changed employers to develop nuclear fuels for 3M Company in St Paul Minnesota. John and Arthella remained in Minnesota for the next 36 years. Norine was born and all of their children were raised in Minnesota. John transitioned from working with nuclear fuels to working with coated abrasives and manufacturing process improvement. John served in many church, scouting, and community positions. He received the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver award in 1979. John retired in 1990 and spent the next six years traveling, bicycling, golfing, and continuing to serve in the church and in scouting. In 1996 thru 1998 John and Arthella served a mission for the LDS church in Sendai, Japan. When they returned they moved from Minnesota to Salt Lake City so they could be at the ‘cross roads’ as children and grandchildren from around the nation traveled through the area on vacations or for education. John continued his service as father, grandfather, and great grandfather and maintained his love for bicycling and walking.
Pervading themes through his life have been faith, love and service for the Lord Jesus Christ, for his wife and family, for others in the church and community and a love for learning and understanding and growing.
