Joe L Harris

d. June 22, 2022

Joe Lesley Harris, a longtime resident of the Salt Lake Valley, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. He was 100 years old.
Born on September 18, 1921, in Hill County, Texas, Joe was the fifth child of Arthur “ABB” Harris and Mary Etta Yale Harris. He had nine siblings, including a twin brother, and grew up picking cotton on his family’s farm. He graduated from Whitney High School, where he played football and basketball, and went on to join the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was during his time with the CCC that Joe came to Utah and met the love of his life, Barbara Thompson. They married in 1944 and remained together until Barbara’s passing in 2016.
Joe served his nation with honor during World War II. He was a technical sergeant in the Marines and participated in such crucial engagements as the Battle of Iwo Jima. Even in the last weeks of his life, he could recount his military experience in vivid detail. After the war, Joe returned to Utah and raised his family. He had a long career at Kennecott Copper, retiring as a supervisor in 1984.
Loving, generous, and wise, Joe was a blessing in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Although his loved ones will miss him deeply, he leaves behind a legacy of compassion and humility that will never be forgotten.
Joe is survived by his sister, Wanda Banner, his sons, Steven Harris (Julie) and Scott Harris (Kathy), and his daughter, Leslie Tufts (Daigh), as well as his nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. A viewing for Joe will be held at Memorial Redwood Mortuary on Wednesday June 29th from 10 AM until Noon. The mortuary is located at 6500 South Redwood Road West Jordan, UT. A Graveside service will be held directly after the viewing at Valley View Cemetery, which is located at 4335 W 4100 S, West Valley City at 12:30 P.M.
