Joe Noboru Ikeda passed away Friday, April 29th at home after several years of battling cancer. Joe was born to Harry Michizo and Jane Ikemoto Ikeda October 21, 1938, in Torrance, California. He was 3 years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed, causing his family to abandon their home and move to Hibbard, Idaho. The whole Ikeda family worked hard together to earn a living in this farming community. It was here that Joe became converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He attended Madison high school and played the clarinet in the marching band, graduating in 1956. Joe served a full-time mission in the Northern Far East Mission in 1958/60, serving in Japan. Joe also served honorably in the Army National Guard at Rexburg, Idaho.
After 2 years at Ricks college, Joe completed a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Utah. He met Aileen Shiratori while attending the Dai Ichi branch of the Church, and they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple Sept 16, 1966.
Not long after their marriage Joe was hit by a car while on his motorcycle. He used the settlement to help his parents. He suffered lifelong injuries from this accident.
Joe and Aileen settled in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City, where they lived for 48 years. They were very active in the Church and community. Joe put his farming talent to work in a large and verdant garden, while serving in many callings including Bishop, and in later years, ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. Joe worked as a Chemist for Ireco/Dyno-Nobel for 35 years.
In the summer of 1981, he was called to serve as the mission President of the Nagoya, Japan Mission. Accepting this assignment required Joe, Aileen and their three children to move to Japan for three years. In Japan, the missionaries affectionately referred to him as “the Buch.”
Joe loved to garden, fish, sing, cook, read books, build furniture, tell stories, and play with his grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his sister, Nancy Lehew, brother Thomas Ikeda (Judy), Daughters Joleen Carter (Nathan), Janeal Fonua (Josh), and son Jonathan. Joe and Aileen have 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. He is proceeded in death by his wife Aileen, and son Joseph.
