Joanne Smith

There is much rejoicing in the heavens as our dear Joanne greets her loved ones and bids us, “See you next time!” She passed away May 7, 2016 at the age of 81.  Joanne DeHaan Smith was born in Ogden, Utah July 11, 1934 to John Egbert and Afton Brown DeHaan. She attended East High School, and later married her childhood sweetheart, Gordon Nathaniel Smith on October 28, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. Throughout their 60 years of marriage, they lived in the Salt Lake Avenues, Provo, UT, Burley, ID, and then set anchor for 50 years in Salt Lake City on Maplewood Drive.  Joanne lovingly raised a family of eight children, gave many years of church service, and pursued her own education – earning her Bachelor’s degree with honors at Westminster College.  She worked over 25 years as an educator and was adored by generations of students, teaching and counseling at the elementary through college levels.  With her unquenchable zest for life, she never sat still and was always looking for a meaningful project.  She was indefatigable in her efforts to beautify the world around her, make life better for her family, and reach out to the one in need.  She continued serving in her sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, and with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.  She deeply loved her family and was always making plans to get together. Her unique flair and attention to detail made every event a true celebration!  Christmas was a hallmark event she planned for all year. While on this earth, she actively soaked in every part of it.  Mountains, birds, rocks, flowers, streams, canyons; they all made her heart sing.
Joanne is preceded in death by her beloved daughter Annette Smith Hill, and is survived by her husband Gordon, children David (Elizabeth) Smith, (Russ Hill), Jodee Smith, Paul (Diane) Smith, Lori (Steven) Pantuso, Andrew (Marilee) Smith, Suzanne Smith, Timothy (Toni) Smith, 40 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Little Cottonwood 5th Ward 1160 E Vine St, Murray, UT.  Family and friends may visit Friday evening, May 13, 2016 from 5:00–7:00 p.m., and on Saturday morning prior to services from 9:45–10:45 a.m.  Interment will be at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery 3115 E 7800 S Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.
