Joanne Knowlden Yates

February 24, 1934 — February 3, 2021

Joanne Knowlden Yates, 86, daughter of Kenneth George Knowlden and Gertrude Margaret Smith, returned to her loving Heavenly Father on February 3, 2021.
Joanne was born February 24, 1934 in Magna, Utah.  Joanne loved to sing and act. She held the lead in several plays at Cypress High School.
At the age of 19, she met her sweetheart, Delbert Lavar Yates, as he was preparing to leave for military service. After almost a whirlwind courtship, they were engaged and then sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 15, 1953. They were together 63 years before Yates’ death in 2016. They had 3 children.
Shortly after their marriage, the happy couple spent three years in Bermuda, which Joanne loved. She worked at the PX store on the military base.
Joanne loved to work with her hands creating beautiful crafts. She especially loved arranging flowers and painting. She was a business woman and owned a ceramic shop and JoDell Flowers. She designed and created beautiful flowers for several weddings. She shared many of her talents by teaching others, and working in various callings for the women’s organization in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She finally retired when they moved to Magalia, California; and then later settled in St. George, Utah.
Joanne is survived by her younger half-sister, Ethel (Thomas)Jeffs; three children, Kevin (Anthony) Yates of Kingman, Arizona; Byran (Cindy) Yates of Shelley, Idaho; and Jolynn Yates of St. George, Utah; as well as grandchildren, Matt (Karee) Yates, Jennifer (Michael) Mayer, Lee (Whitney)Yates, and Stephanie (Cody) Miller; eight great-grandchildren, and beloved dog, Pepper. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; three siblings, Darlene Knowlden, Kirk Dee Knowlden, and Gertrude Mary (Fred) Eley.
