Joann Davies Smith

September 4, 1944 — January 23, 2025

Joann Davies Smith was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. Joann (80) passed away peacefully on January 23rd, 2025, in Bountiful, Utah. Joann was born on September 4th, 1944, to Clyde and Meda Davies in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is the 5th of their 10 children. She attended the University of Utah where she graduated a proud Ute with a degree in social work. She met her husband, Derrel Smith, a rival BYU Cougar while working in SLC. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 30, 1970.

Joann and Derrel eventually settled in Oregon, where they had 3 kids. Joann was a stay-at-home mom while her kids were young and then returned to school to get a 2nd degree in accounting. She passed her CPA exam and began a much-enjoyed career working for the IRS. She retired in 2010 and then fulfilled a lifelong goal of moving to the St. George area.

She enjoyed spending as much time as possible there, working in her yard and watching game shows galore. Joann was an avid animal lover, always having dogs and cats in the home, including the occasional gerbil, parakeet, rabbit, and ducks for her children. Upon retiring, she spent much of her time doting on her adopted dogs and fostering kittens for the Humane Society.

She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, unconditional love for animals and silly, sarcastic personality.

She is survived by her children: Traci Peterson, Ben (Rebecca) Smith, and Jenny Smith, four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and siblings: Ron, Brent, Annette, Dorothy, and Dan. She is preceded in death by her husband, Derrel, parents Clyde and Meda, siblings Walt, Ray, Albert and Elaine, son-in-law Mark Peterson, and beloved dog, Cookie.
