Joan Palmer Engh, beloved daughter of earthly and heavenly parents, peacefully passed way the morning of February 26, 2025. She was born into the loving home of Evelyn Orme Palmer and Theo (Tip) Palmer, on December 13, 1938. Joan was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. Home and family were her greatest passion and priority. She devoted her life to raising her 6 children. She bandaged scraped knees and mended broken hearts. As her family married and left home, she focused on her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was so very proud of each one, knew each by name, always had a Grandma Treat when they visited, and a gift for each at their very large and famous Christmas parties. Home was Joan's favorite place to be, a place of refuge and fun. Joan was famous for her entertaining skills and loved welcoming friends and family into her home. She made holidays special with lasting memories for everyone.
Joan's most cherished memories of her childhood would include; frequent walks with her parents to Liberty Park to ride the beautiful carousel, trips to Tooele and Grantsville to visit Grandmas and Grandpas Orme and Palmer. She often spoke of the move from the Salt Lake City apartment, saying goodbye to "adopted" Grandma and Grandpa Giles, and moving to the country, and into the "little house on 33rd," and finally moving to Keller Lane in East Millcreek. This beautiful home was built by "Daddy" and she shared her large bedroom with her 3 younger sisters. This shared time together set the 4 of them on a path of closeness they have shared their entire lives.
Joan was blessed to find her eternal companion, David Engh, early in life, even wearing an engagement ring during part of her senior year in high school. They promised her parents they would wait until after graduation to be married. They were sealed as eternal partners in the Salt Lake Temple 3 weeks after graduation on June 28, 1957. They have stayed devoted and by each other's side for 68 years.
Joan knew and loved her Savior. Therefore, it was easy for her to keep her covenants. She led by example, showing how to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many found comfort and peace by merely being in her presence with a listening ear and an open heart. Joan expressed gratitude for courageous ancestors who followed their faith from the shores of Scotland and England, to the Salt Lake Valley.
Joan served in many church callings. She served many years as a Hostess in the Church Office Building in downtown Salt Lake City. She was a member of The General Primary Board to help write the Star manual. She blessed many by her years of service in the Jordan River and Draper Utah Temples.
Joan truly leaves behind her legacy of love. Her great hope was to be remembered by her family. She leaves behind the love of her life, Dave, and their 6 children, Mark (Terri), Calvin (Leslee), Julie (Kent), Stanford (Christine), Lynette (Greg), MaryAnn (Andrew), and the large posterity of 25 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren, including a great granddaughter due in April. Her 3 sisters, Kathy, Diane, and Carolyn will miss her greatly. She is preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Tyler Engh.
Joan's family wish to thank her hospice care givers for their care and attention to her. They also wish to give thanks and appreciation to her tender everyday caregivers; Kanani, Vili, Beverly, and Lei. They are angels who became friends, who have helped bear heavy burdens, bringing comfort and encouragement everyday with their devoted care.
We as her family, have learned that God's heart is full of tenderness for his children. He sends blessings from Heaven and ministers with His love and mercy.
